Pour la première fois dans les temps modernes, une église locale, l'église du Congo (ex-Zaïre), a créé pour son peuple un rite de la messe qui lui est propre dans la fidélité à la liturgie chrétienne et au génie culturel africain. L'histoire de ce rite comporte des aspects non seulement liturgiques et pastoraux, mais aussi strictement théologiques ; l'identité de l'église locale dans la communion de l'Église universelle en est le principal enjeu. En effet, à l'heure où la réflexion sur la relation théologiquement fondée entre Église universelle et église locale paraît préoccupante, l'auteur propose une étude qui retrace le chemin de l'église locale du Congo et en même temps amorce une inculturation de la théologie eucharistique à partir du rite célébré et en lien avec les mentalités du peuple. L'intérêt de cette étude dépasse le cadre de la seule église du Congo et s'étend à toutes les églises locales en quête d'identité.

Cette thèse part de la constatation que la conversion au christianisme des Nande dans le diocèse de Butembo-Beni au Congo-Kinshasa (RDC) s’est accompagnée d’une profonde transformation sociale, culturelle et religieuse. Cette adhésion à la nouvelle religion a été rendue possible par le fait que le christianisme est perçu comme porteur de nouvelles valeurs humaines, spirituelles et matérielles, et sert au progrès et au développement de la personne. La recherche examine le processus de cette transformation. Elle fut le résultat des confrontations et de malentendus, d’échanges et d’appropriations. Elle a abouti à une forme d’acculturation religieuse qui suppose des ruptures et assure une continuité culturelle. Elle a conduit à une « réorientation » de la vie des Nande qui trouvent dans ce processus des raisons d’être et de vivre et contribue à la construction d’une nouvelle identité, individuelle ou collective. Elle entraîne de nouveaux problèmes nés de la christianisation de la majorité de la population. This thesis is based on the observation that the conversion of Nande of the diocese of Butembo-Beni in Congo-Kinshasa (DRC) was accompanied with a deep social, cultural and religious transformation. That adhesion to a new religion has been possible by the fact that the christianism has been forseen as carrier of new human, spiritual and material values for the progress and the developpement of human being. This research analyses the process of that transformation which is the relultat of confrontations and misunderstanding, exchanges and appropriation. It occurred a kind of “religious acculturation” which implies rupture and cultural continuity. It led to a “reorientation” of the life of Nande who find in that process new reasons of being and living. This fact contributes to the construction of their new identity, individualy and communautary. Nevertheless, adhesion to christianity generated new social and religious problems.

Part One addresses 'Theological Foundations.' The five essays in this section deal with the Bible, Theology and Ecumenism. The subjects of theological methods, contextual hermeneutics, and appropriate curriculum are given special attention. Of course even foundational issues cannot be discussed in a vacuum and so each of the essays addresses these foundational subjects in the light of African realities. Part Two deals with 'Contemporary Issues.' It is particularly in this section that the traditional themes in African theology have been somewhat displaced by concerns which are today very pressing indeed. Three essays are devoted to the question of HIV/AIDS. This disease, which has devastated the African continent, demands a theological and practical response from those who claim to follow Jesus Christ. If the churches do not respond to this crisis with energy and determination we should not be surprised if the next generation wonders whether the Gospel has the power which we claim that it has. Two essays address the question of Islam and Muslim-Christian Relations in Africa. The resurgence of Islam in the world today is a concern of many. For those who believe in Jesus, this is a challenge which demands much wisdom and love. How should we respond to our Muslim neighbours? What are appropriate and thoughtful ways to share the love of Christ? Two further essays appear under the title of 'The Marginalized.' This could, of course, be a much large section. Those who suffer from AIDS could be included in this number, and one might have expected to see at least one essay on the place of women. In this volume, however, the 'disabled' and youth are highlighted. Both groups are clearly in need of the attention of the churches, and both groups are clearly misunderstood and neglected. The final section of Part Two contains essays, which focus attention on 'Theological Paedagogy.' All of the other contributions to this volume make suggestions and arguments about curriculum, resources, and issues of concern for theological educators. The causal aim of this book is that these essays may help us to reflect in an intentional way on the implications of contemporary realities for the future of theological education.
