Author: John Burdick
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 0429516401

Pages : 253
Book Description
Originally published in 2004. In Brazil the liberationist reading of the Bible was once supposed to be an unstoppable force for social change, yet many observers now say that in the era of neo-liberalism the liberationist project may be counted all but dead. In Legacies of Liberation, John Burdick offers a bold new interpretation of the state of the Catholic liberationism. Challenging the claim that it is dead, Burdick carefully builds the case that it continues to exert a major influence on Brazilian society and culture, through its penetration of a broad range of grassroots struggles, especially those having to do with race, gender, and land. Burdick brings to bear on his analysis an understanding of Brazil rooted in twenty years of fieldwork, and a perspective shaped by anthropology, theology and history.

A Legacy of Liberation
Author: Mark Gevisser
Publisher: St. Martin's Press
ISBN: 0230620205
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 399
Book Description
A gripping social history of South Africa's past and future and beautifully narrated by one of Africa's most esteemed journalists, From Struggle to Liberation sheds light on the future of the nation under a new regime. With unprecedented access to Thabo Mbeki and the top brass in the African National Congress, Mark Gevisser weaves a nuanced portrait of the black experience under apartheid. Revelations about the current president and the politics that continue to shape South Africa include: - Thabo Mbeki's difficult relationship with his own political activist and largely absent father Govan Mbeki, who was imprisoned on Robben Island with Nelson Mandela. - How the death of his son Kwanda in the diamond mines and the murder of his brother Jama directly affected his leadership and will continue to shape the governance of Africa for years to come. - The reasons behind Mbeki's puzzling refusal to admit that the HIV virus causes AIDS, which in South Africa claims 800 lives per day, and his support of corrupt governments such as Zimbabwe's. - Inside rivalry between Thabo Mbeki and Jacob Zuma, the populist leader destined to take over as president in 2009. This accessible account of a monumental period in world history is the definitive look at contemporary South Africa.

Pink Triangle Legacies
Author: William Jake Newsome
Publisher: Cornell University Press
ISBN: 1501765507
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 303
Book Description
Pink Triangle Legacies traces the transformation of the pink triangle from a Nazi concentration camp badge and emblem of discrimination into a widespread, recognizable symbol of queer activism, pride, and community. W. Jake Newsome provides an overview of the Nazis' targeted violence against LGBTQ+ people and details queer survivors' fraught and ongoing fight for the acknowledgement, compensation, and memorialization of LGBTQ+ victims. Within this context, a new generation of queer activists has used the pink triangleโa reminder of Germany's fascist pastโas the visual marker of gay liberation, seeking to end queer people's status as second-class citizens by asserting their right to express their identity openly. The reclamation of the pink triangle occurred first in West Germany, but soon activists in the United States adopted this chapter from German history as their own. As gay activists on opposite sides of the Atlantic grafted pink triangle memories onto new contexts, they connected two national communities and helped form the basis of a shared gay history, indeed a new gay identity, that transcended national borders. Pink Triangle Legacies illustrates the dangerous consequences of historical silencing and how the incorporation of hidden histories into the mainstream understanding of the past can contribute to a more inclusive experience of belonging in the present. There can be no justice without acknowledging and remembering injustice. As Newsome demonstrates, if a marginalized community seeks a history that liberates them from the confines of silence, they must often write it themselves.
