Book Description
Excerpt from Lectures on the Nature, Subjects and Mode of Christian Baptism The first edition of this little Treatise having been exhausted, and inquiries from different quarters hav ing been made for it, a second edition is now pre sented to the Christian public. The author had in tended to enlarge the work, by the introduction of additional matter, derived from the history of the Christian church; with a view to make it clearly evident, that infant baptism has prevailed from apostolic days. For this purpose, ample materials are at hand. On further reflection, however, it has been thought best to send it forth in its original form. It was designed to be a convenient manual, for the benefit of the disciple who desires to know the will of his Lord. And brevity, if combined with per spicuity, renders itmore suitable for the end intend ed. Arise, O Lord, plead thine own cause. Excerpt from Reply to Lectures: On the Nature, Subjects, and Mode of Christian Baptism No alteration is made in this edition, of the Reply, except, that the typographical errors have been corrected. Its posi tions remaining impregnable, and having proved a valuable aid to a number of inquirers after duty, it is again issued from the press, to share in the struggle of truth against error, and gain additional victories through the power of the arm that wields it. To Him it is commended, whose honor, as Lawgiver in Zion, it vindicate and whose ordinance it aims to restore to primitive purity, in firm faith that His word shall not return unto Him void, but shall accomplish His pleasure, and prosper in the thing whereunto He hath sent it. Book Description
Excerpt from The Doctrine of Christian Baptism: An Exposition of Its Nature, Subjects, Mode, and Duty The nature, design, obligation, and efficacy of Christian baptism should be carefully studied by all Christians, and especially by Christian ministers. This ordinance comes to us by Divine authority. When our Lord commissioned his disciples to go out and preach the gospel to all nations, he also commissioned them to baptize. The command to preach is no more authoritative than the command to baptize. They are joined together in the great commis sion. Here we date the divine origin of baptism as a standing, obligatory, and perpetual ordinance of the Christian Church. Here is the great charter from which the Christian ministry in all ages drew their Divine au thority for the administration of this ordinance. If it were not possible for us to know anything about the nature, design, and efficacy of this ordinance, this would not free us from the obligation, because the Lord commands it to be done. Abraham did not understand' the' design of the Allwise Father when he commanded him* to offer up Isaac as a sacrifice, but that did not prevent him from going forward. Obedience was his rule of action. Our Divine Lord says, If ye love me keep myf commandments. Every step the Christian takes along' the line of obedience will give him new strength and{ figor. The faultless Christ was careful to fulfill every, l righteous ordinance of the law, thereby teaching us the necessity and importance of obedience. Book Description
Excerpt from Christian Baptism: An Examination of the Rev. Mr. Fowler's Lectures on the "Mode and Subjects of Baptism" Now I shall cheerfully leave my intelligent and candid fellow citizens to judge between me and the author, with regard to these charges of abuse, vulgarity, &c. After they have read my 'address' in reply to Concord', and my Response' to the First Congregational Church in Fall River; and especially when they shall have considered the course which Mr. F. And his people have taken with regard to this controversy. Still, as the author of these lectures aims his artillery at me, (though he has not used my name, ) it seems to devolve on me to examine his lectures And as I have from the first been willing that the light of day should shine on the whole of this controversy, I shall not now seek concealment, nor resort to artifice, but endeavor openly and fearlessly, and yet affectionately, to expose error and de' fend truth. In prosecuting the work before me, I intend to treat Rev. Mr. Fow ler and his people with entire respect; and I hope that I may yet live and have Opportunity to give them and the world substantial proof that I do not indulge any unkind feeling toward them as Chris tians. It would afford me sacred joy' to do them good - to promote their immortal welfare - to reciprocate every expression of Christian love.' I do sincerely, before God and men, publicly invite an inter change of kind offices with the Rev. Mr. Fowler and the members of his church, and I do hope that no unpleasant feelings arising from this controversy will be allowed to obstruct a friendly intercourse with each other. Book Description
Excerpt from The Mode of Christian Baptism The little book, oi! Which this is a preface, was written because it is needed. I have frequently been asked by members of the church for a book on the mode of baptism, setting forth our views on that subject. And inasmuch as our church has no work on the mode of baptism suf ficiently comprehensive, and yet not too large, I have writ ten this to fill the vacancy. A great many Cumberland Presbyterians have heard immersion preached so much, and with such an air of triumph, without anything on the other side, that they have come to the conclusion that pouring or sprinkling are used only as a matter of ex pediency. They are told in the pulpit, and out of It, that baptize means nothing but dip or immerse, and your educated men know it. Our preachers have always been too busy preaching the gospel to spend much time in delivering lectures on the mode of baptism. The written page is what we need on this subject. I know of no book in our church or out of it, in which the mode of baptism is as thoroughly discussed, in a small compass, as l have done in this. I have aimed to use the right words, and as few of them as possible, so as to present the facts and arguments at command in a clear and distinct light. The reader can form but little conception of the labor and time spent in collating and arranging the facts as he sees them. Book Description
Excerpt from Holy Baptism, Its Mode, Subjects, and Sacramental Nature, Vol. 1 of 3: The Mode of Baptism in the Light of Scripture and History IN very many places what is called a revival of religion centres around the never-ending controversy concerning the mode of Baptism. In one sense this fact might seem to mean that a great importance is properly assigned to Baptism as a Sacrament, as an essential part of the Christian scheme of salvation. But the teaching connected therewith does not justify such an inference. All the importance is given to the way the water is used in the Sacrament, and no Spiritual effect is held to be connected therewith. This great difference seems to be on the side of inconsistency. For, if it does not really practically matter Whether a so-called believer is baptized or not, it cannot be of any consequence in what way the washing of water takes place. If there be no effect as regards spiritual life to be looked for from Baptism rightly and properly performed, it seems but vanity and vexation of spirit to make so much of what is called its valid performance. But since there are so many persistent and reiterated assertions made that the validity of Baptism depends upon one mode -that which is called improperly immersion, - and not being convinced that such dogmatic statements are supported so certainly by Scripture and History, I beg to offer you such reasons and arguments as may, perhaps, help you to come to a more reasonable conviction of the whole truth. And here I wish to remind you and myself, that assertion is not argument. No amount of zeal nor lung power, will appeal to the intelligence of a reasonable and reasoning mind while under certain conditions either, and certainly both, will sometimes have a convincing effect upon certain temperaments. As for zeal, we know that zeal is oftentimes found with error as well as with truth. There is such a thing possible as having a zeal of God, but not according t-o knowledge. (rom. X., St Paul had a zeal when he persecuted the Church, as much as he had afterwards when he preached the faith which once he destroyed. (gal. I., He thus describes himself in his Epistle to the Philippians (iii., 6) concerning zeal, persecuting the church. With regard to the force or power of utterance, this, too, can add nothing either to truth or to error. We are here put in mind of the worshippers of the great Goddess Diana.
