Book Description
Excerpt from The Public Health Acts and Other Sanitary Laws and Regulations: Specially Prepared for the Diploma of Public Health IN this Work, a need long felt has, it is hoped, been supplied, by condensing and summarizing Sanitary Law, and the principal bye-laws of the Local Government Board, into one small volume. The law on each topic has been quoted verbatim from the statutes, the merest tautology being, in a few instances, avoided. The book has been written at the suggestion of my brother gilbert elliott, who is preparing similar volumes on all the subjects required for the Diploma of Public Health, and Tropical Medicine. Book Description
Excerpt from Principles of Sanitary Science and the Public Health: With Special Reference to the Causation and Prevention of Infectious Diseases The last quarter of the century has witnessed the firm establishment and fruitful development of these several conceptions. The principal theories to which they have given birth have been thoroughly tested, and stand to-day for the most part as accepted scientific principles; while their applications to the practical conduct of life have everywhere been followed by results of extraordinary in terest and importance. Public hygiene and state medicine have become subjects compelling the attention of states men and affecting the welfare of nations. Sanitary law has been endowed with unusual privileges and powers, and sanitary regulations controlling the commerce of the civilized world are debated in international congresses. Sanitary science and preventive medicine, terms practically unknown before this century, have become almost house hold words. Sanitary arts of great range and importance have grown up; vast sums are annually spent for private, and especially for public, sanitation; and human life has been made safer, longer and probably happier. Book Description
Excerpt from The Theory and Practice of Hygiene (Notter and Firth) The analysis Of water and air has necessarily been considered in some detail, not only from the chemical but also from the biological point Of view; this latter aspect of the question has been so much developed during recent years as to constitute almost a distinct branch of study. In endeavouring to give explanations of methods for the bacteriological examination of water and air, we have adhered to the principle of advocating only such methods of research as come within the possibilities Of the duties of a Medical Officer of Health, and which, in our hands, have been found to be practically useful. The subjects of Ventilation and Heating have been considered at some length, and advisedly so, because experience has indicated to us that these are matters usually imperfectly treated in the majority of text-books, and are subjects, too, upon which students and others are inadequately informed. The accounts Of Scurvy and the dietetic value of Alcohol are given, with the exception of some minor verbal alterations, in much of the original language of Dr Parkes. Our knowledge upon these matters has been so little changed during recent years that it was felt that very little improvement could be made upon the original statements. Similarly, the chapters upon Exercise and Clothing have been but slightly altered by us. One matter of great difficulty has been the question of Sanitary Law. While fully recognising the importance of every sanitary officer studying the various legislative enactments bearing upon the Public Health in their original form, and the difficulties in the way of either making a legal chapter interesting or profitable reading, we have endeavoured, in the section which deals with sanitary legislation, to overcome these objections and to construct a chapter which may be not only interesting but useful. Book Description
Excerpt from Legal Principles of Public Health Administration Recognizing the fact that the work is for the use of widely differing classes of readers, it has seemed necessary to rehearse in the earlier chapters certain elementary principles, that sanitarians and members of the bar may meet upon a common ground of under standing. In the past, laws proposed by sanitarians have Often failed through neglect of the principles of law; likewise those drafted by lawyers, have fallen short of their purpose because they have not com prehended the present advance, and the discovered facts in science. Legislators have neglected to act because they have not realized their responsibilities. The science Of public health has advanced far beyond the administration. It needs the co-operation of all to attain the results which by right belong to the nation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
