Book Description
First Studies of Plant Life is written with a truly heart-warming purpose. Written by a distinguished academic but pitched at a level which is designed to allow a teacher to captivate a child in the earliest years of school. Atkinson takes the view that reasoning and 'why?' questions are suitable and appropriate for even the tiniest children and should not be held in reserve for a later date. It centres on an understanding of the 'life history' of a plant rather than tedious and traditional encouragements to rote learn and exclude context. George Francis Atkinson tells us in a startling modern way that a child does not best learn about a flower by uprooting it, dissecting and classifying it. Rather they should plant a seed, find out how it germinates, watch it grow, learn about its food, see how it breathes, reproduces and ultimately dies back. For as the author states 'When the child has once become acquainted with the conditions and necessities of plant life, how different will the world seem to him.' The book begins and progresses in an intuitive way. It begins with the particular characteristics of seeds and their peculiarities and progresses all the way on to the root systems, the changing colours of the leaves on trees and the bright momentary flowers and bids by plants for pollination and reproduction. Small engaging experiments suitable for independent learners, homeschooling or teachers in a classroom are outlined and encouraged, further tying the book to an inclusive ethos of hands on learning. A child could hardly fail to fall in love with botany when taught from this book but an adult has scarcely more opportunity to avoid being enthralled. Book Description
Excerpt from Leaves and Flowers, or Object Lessons in Botany With a Flora: Prepared for Beginners in Academics and Public Schools Let it not be said, however, that Botany attracts such willing votaries because it requires no labor, no persevering effort. N 0 science is more intricate or profound. It cannot be understood except by vigorous and persevering effort. Consequently, in its successful pursuit there is disci pline for the mind as well as for the body; and since the subject itself is replete with refinement and beauty, and fresh from the hand of God, its pursuit must also conduce to the invigoration of the moral nature. Book Description
Excerpt from The Flower-Finder N 0 special study or training is required to follow these charts. It will only be necessary, for one not familiar with botanical terms, to master the directions, particularly the directions regarding the form and arrangement Of the leaves and flowers. So much botanical knowledge it will harm no one to acquire. Peculiarities of the plants, flowers, and fruits, obvious to the non-botanist, but fairly constant, have been selected, while botanical terms have been as far as possible avoided and replaced by words in common use. I should be sorry if this plan suggests that it is not worth while to learn the scientific Classification of the flowers, or that it is a matter of no interest to study their habits and their method of fertilization. But the main object of this book is to facilitate the recognition of the flowers and fruits; it is little likely that anyone interested enough to go so far will go no farther. If a flower has eluded the searcher I have generally found it due to the fact that the charts have been tried without study ing the explanatory chapter. The commonest stumbling-block has been the failure to learn the meaning of the terms shrub and herb, composite flower, and compound leaf. For the families and the Latin names Gray's Manual (seventh Edition) has been followed. For other Latin names Britton and Brown should be consulted. These authorities have been my main reliance for facts, though many other books have been consulted. In names likely to be mispronounced, the grave accent is inserted for the long sound, the acute for the short, as in the Manual. In case the derivation of the generic name is not given it may generally be assumed it is either unknown or is an original plant name. Book Description
Excerpt from The Story of the Plants And to glide gently over the distinction between hydro-carbons and carbo-hydrates; which could interest none but chemical students. I have been well content to make these trivial sacrifices of formal accuracy in order to find room for fuller exposition of the delightful relations between flowers and insects, birds and fruits, soil and plant, climate and foliage. In one word, I have dwelt more on the functions and habits of plants than on their structure and classification. At the same time I have tried to lead on my reader by gradual stages to the further study of plants in the concrete; and I shall be disappointed if my little book does not induce a considerable pro portion of those into whose hands it may fall to pursue the subject further in our fields and woods' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
