Book Description
Excerpt from League of Nations, Vol. 5: 1922 As to Germany, little need be said. She also has had her politics. That she should wish to negotiate on a subject the decision of which made a difference of billions of dollars in her obligations to pay was inevitable. That she has continuously since the armistice turned over large quantities of goods and materials is almost unknown. Book Description
Excerpt from The League of Nations This, or something like this, has hitherto been the history of the ideal that has now become associated with the phrase A League of Nations; but it does not follow that the history of this'or of other ideals will be the same after the war as before it. There is more at stake in this war than the existence of individual States or Empires, or the fate of a Continent; the whole of modern civilization is at stake, and whether it will perish and be submerged, as has happened to previous civilizations of older types, or whether it will live and progress, depends upon whether the nations engaged in this war, and even those that are onlookers, learn the lessons that the experience of the war may teach them. It must be with nations as with individuals; in the great trials of life they must become better or worse - they cannot stand still. They must learn and profit by experience and rise to greater heights, or else sink lower and drop eventually into the abyss. And this war is the greatest trial of which there is any record in history. If the war does not teach mankind new lessons that will so dominate the thought and feeling of those who survive it, and those who succeed the survivors, as to make new things possible, then the war will be the greatest catastrophe as well as the most grievous trial and suffering of which mankind has any record. Book Description
Excerpt from League of Nations, 1921, Vol. 4 The corporation is constituted for the purpose of educating the people of all nations to a full knowledge of the waste and destructiveness of war, its evil effects on present social conditions and on the well-being of future generations, and to promote international justice and the brotherhood of man; and, generally, by every practical means to promote peace and good will among all mankind - Bylaws of the Corporation. It is to this patient and thorough work of education, through the school, the college. The church, the press. The pamphlet and the book, that the World Peace Foundation addresses itself. - Edwin Cinn. The idea of force can not at once be eradicated. It is useless to believe that the nations can be persuaded to disband their present armies and dismantle their present navies, trusting in each other or in the Hague Tribunal to settle any possible differences between them, unless, first, some substitute for the existing forces is provided and demonstrated by experience to be adequate to protect the rights, dignity and territory of the respective nations. My own belief is that the idea which underlies the movement for the Hague Court can be developed so that the nations can be persuaded each to contribute a small percentage of their military forces at sea and on land to form an International Guard or Police Force.
