Book Description
The Literacy and Health Project was set up to determine how reading and health problems were connected. A research phase documented the relationship between literacy and health. Information was collected from community organizations, literature review, three case studies in Ontario, and key informant interviews. The consultation process involved regional workshops across Ontario, a 2-day provincial workshop, and a strategy meeting. Findings demonstrated that virtually all health-related aspects of people with limited literacy skills were worse than for others. Illiteracy had both indirect and direct effects on health. The major impact of illiteracy on health status occurred indirectly. Illiteracy led to poor life-style practices, stress, and unhealthy living and working conditions; it also resulted in lack of access to health information and in inappropriate use of medical and health services. Three crucial areas of action were identified: a commitment to achieve literacy and health for all, a commitment to make environments healthy and safe, and a commitment to ensure equitable access to vital information. Recommendations dealt with issues of equitable access to health-related information. They involved the partnership of government, organizations, and a coordinating body. (English and French summaries of the report are found at the beginning of the report. Appendixes include a 93-item bibliography and a list of project participants. A French-language version of the report is attached.) (YLB)

Book Description
The studies contained in this volume present a sampling of policy and legislation relating to adult learning in various parts of the world. They were produced in the context of a more complete survey, under the auspices of the UNESCO Institute for Education (VIE) in cooperation with the University of Florence, which sought to identify tendencies in this field over the past few years. The international research project, under which these national studies were made, was developed under the direction of Paul Belanger, Director of UIE, and Paolo Federighi, Professor at the University of Florence. An international publication by the two project directors, due to appear at the beginning of 1997, will report on the findings of the project, which involves 26 countries. The contributions presented here reflect a broad geographical spectrum as well as a wide range of policy models. From an analysis of these studies, it is apparent that this is a field in which there has been much innovation and which encompasses markedly varying approaches in response to different national conditions.

Book Description

Book Description
Far from considering the integration problems faced by migrants to be the result of alleged «cultural incompatibility, the articles and conversations in this volume reflect on the combined effects of exclusion stemming from social policy and policy on immigration, employment and nationality. Furthermore, as «intercultural competencies developed in certain hospitals and schools have clearly shown, there are other, much more effective strategies for treating differences in a favourable light which make social rights more accessible to all. These alternative approaches can effectively help to foster social cohesion only if migrants themselves are committed to them, in particular as recognised political players in the European public arena.
