The writer Gabriel Audisio once called the Mediterranean a “liquid continent.” Taking up the challenge issued by Audisio’s phrase, Edwige Tamalet Talbayev insists that we understand the region on both sides of the Mediterranean through a “transcontinental” heuristic. Rather than merely read the Maghreb in the context of its European colonizers from across the Mediterranean, Talbayev compellingly argues for a transmaritime deployment of the Maghreb across the multiple Mediterranean sites to which it has been materially and culturally bound for millennia. The Transcontinental Maghreb reveals these Mediterranean imaginaries to intersect with Maghrebi claims to an inclusive, democratic national ideal yet to be realized. Through a sustained reflection on allegory and critical melancholia, the book shows how the Mediterranean decenters postcolonial nation-building projects and mediates the nomadic subject’s reinsertion into a national collective respectful of heterogeneity. Jean-Paul Sartre's famous question, "For whom do we write?" strikes close to home for francophone writers from the Maghreb. Do these writers address their compatriots, many of whom are illiterate or read no French, or a broader audience beyond Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia? In Experimental Nations, Réda Bensmaïa argues powerfully against the tendency to view their works not as literary creations worth considering for their innovative style or language but as "ethnographic" texts and to appraise them only against the "French literary canon." He casts fresh light on the original literary strategies many such writers have deployed to reappropriate their cultural heritage and "reconfigure" their nations in the decades since colonialism. Tracing the move from the anticolonial, nationalist, and arabist literature of the early years to the relative cosmopolitanism and diversity of Maghrebi francophone literature today, Bensmaïa draws on contemporary literary and postcolonial theory to "deterritorialize" its study. La littérature francophone n'a pas disparu après l'indépendance de l'Algérie, mais s'est développée dans les années 80, pour littéralement exploser dans les années 90. Les intellectuels maghrébins continuent de produire la totalité de leurs écrits littéraires et scientifiques en français et non pas en arabe, malgré la guerre civile et les menaces intégristes. En examinant les études faites entre la fin des années 50 et des années 80, cet ouvrage remet en question l'opposition binaire et réductrice entre l'arabe et le français. Il propose une nouvelle approche du Maghreb, désormais fondée sur quatre paramètres linguistiques et culturels: l'arabe classique, l'arabe parlé, le berbère et le français. Cet ouvrage tente de donner aux lecteurs francophones une vue d'ensemble de la réalité du contexte maghrébin. Il se voudrait aussi être un modeste plaidoyer pour la diversité en Afrique du Nord.
