Cette derniere etudie l'enfant pour lui-meme, tandis que la psychologie genetique cherche dans l'etude de l'enfant la solution des problemes generaux, tels que celui du mecanisme de l'intelligence, de la perception, etc., car, ce n'est qu'en analysant la formation de tels mecanismes que l'on parvient a fournir leur explication causale. En effet, en psychologie comme en biologie, l'explication est inseparable du developpement. De meme l'epistemologie genetique a pour objet l'examen de la formation des connaissances comme telles, c'est-a-dire des relations cognitives entre Ie sujet et les objets: e1le fait donc la transition entre la psychologie genetique et l'epistemologie en general, qu'elle espere enrichir par la consideration du developpement. Mais si l'epistemologie comporte toujours des presuppositions psychologiques (meme dans les theories qui pretendent pouvoir negliger Ie sujet et reduire son activite a un simple {laquo}Iangage{raquo}), qu'il s'agit donc de sou mettre au controle de l'experience et des faits, il intervient en outre dans la theorie des connaissances des considerations de logique ou d'algebre generale, etc., qui ne re1event plus d~ la psychologie, mais de la formalisation ou de la deduction pure. L'epistemologie genetique est donc de par sa nature meme une recherche interdisciplinaire, ou la psychologie genetique joue un role necessaire mais nullement suffisant.

For any country that has a large and diverse migrant population, it is a struggle to connect these people to the country’s institutions, including the healthcare system, which can be overwhelming in its complexity. This is the first book to provide a comprehensive review of the burgeoning literature on theory of mind (TOM) after the preschool years and the first to integrate this literature with other approaches to the study of social understanding. By highlighting the relationship between early and later developments, the book provides readers with a greater understanding of what we know and what we still need to know about higher-order TOM. Although the focus is on development in typical populations, development in individuals with autism and in older adults is also explored to give readers a deeper understanding of possible problems in development. Examining the later developments of TOM gives readers a greater understanding of: Developments that occur after the age of 5. Individual differences in rate of development and atypical development and the effects of those differences. The differences in rate of mastery which become more marked, and therefore more informative, with increased age. What it means to have a “good theory of mind.” The differences between first- and second- order theory of mind development in preschoolers, older children, adolescents, and adults. The range of beliefs available to children at various ages, providing a fuller picture of what is meant by “understanding of belief.” After the introduction, the literature on first-order developments during the preschool period is summarized to serve as a backdrop for understanding more advanced developments. Chapter 3 is devoted to the second-order false belief task. Chapters 4 and 5 introduce a variety of other measures for understanding higher-level forms of TOM thereby providing readers with greater insight into other cognitive and social developmental outcomes. Chapter 6 discusses the relation between children’s TOM abilities and other aspects of their development. Chapters 7 and 8 place the work in a historical context. First, the research on the development of social and mental worlds that predated the emergence of TOM is examined. Although John Dewey's ideas have been of central interest in Anglo-Saxon philosophy and history of education, it is only recently that similar interest has developed in continental Europe. Deweyan philosophy of education has had to pass through national filters, which meant that it was received in national contexts of reform. The `German Dewey' was differently construed to the French, Italian, or English Dewey. This seems to change after 1989 (and the fall of socialist education) when interest in Dewey increased. The new political and philosophical interest in Dewey has to do with the lost alternative `socialism', and thus with the opening of Eastern Europe and the new problems of education within a worldwide community. This volume stresses two points. The original interest of European education in Dewey will be presented in case studies, concerning different national contexts and thus different Dewey's. What can be called the renewal of interest will be argued from different sides. It is our intention to show that today's interest in Dewey is not the remake of the reception within the different camps of progressive education. This volume will be of interest to philosophers of education, historians of education, and people engaged in the philosophy, history and the reception of Dewey.
