Book Description
Excerpt from Legends, Lyrics and Hymns I have selected from my published poems such as I deemed suited to the object of this little volume. To these I have added a number of new ones, England and Rome, The Prayer of St. Patrick, The Legend of St. Edward and the Irish Cripple, Eveline, and several others, which are now published for the first time. The hymns which appear at the end of the volume are translations from the Roman Vesperal. These translations were undertaken several years ago for the Catholic Psalmist, from which work they are now selected. In attempting them, two conditions were put upon me - viz., that the hymns should be rendered as literally as possible, and that the original metre should be preserved as exactly as the difference of the two languages would allow, in order that the airs assigned to the Latin originals in the Psalmist, might be equally available for the hymns in their English dress, and thus render them useful for novenas and other like functions. In endeavouring to carry out these ideas, I need scarcely say how many minor elegancies of diction, or turns of thought, had to be sacrificed; but, on the other hand, there is not one of the English hymns which cannot be sung to the air to which the corresponding Latin original is set and the utility of this arrangement is sufficiently proved by the fact, that the translations are frequently thus employed by those who find both devotion and pleasure in the use of English hymns, while the satisfaction with which they are used is certainly not lessened in the mind of a pious and sincere Catholic, by the reflection that they are translated, as closely as it is possible to render one language into another, from the authorized songs of the Church. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1845 edition. Excerpt: ... sonnet. I Have not lived to see my hairs grow grey, Nor hath the hand of age bedimmed mine eyes, My life is yet the morning of my day, Its first pag'd sun has scarce begun to rise; My home is not within the palace walls, Nor am I heir to any titled dower, Yet, I have loved the mighty waterfalls, And gathered joy from many a simple flower; The humble warblings of a little bird, Is joyous music to my youthful ear, Oft have I lingered 'neath the notes I've heard, And sent them back a smile for strains so dear. Greenfields, sweet brooks, and all the simple flowers, Are things which weave in life its sunny hours. I Love to wander in the silvery eve, Of some enchanting summer's day, And watch the golden glimmerings weave, The pensive dirge and welcome lay; When all the earth is silent, still, And music rises from the rill, Like Nature's speech so wild and free, It charms me with its witchery. It is the time for thought and song, For the Muses gaily trip along In the gentle gale and fluttering breeze Giving strains of joy to the bending trees. I'll sit and rest in this silent bower, Which is shaded by the hill, 28 A Summer's Evening. And see the stream with its crystal dower, Become wedded to the rill; And I'll weave a strain for a bridal lay, Of the beauties of the earth, For the birds to chant as they fly away, A song of love and mirth. The world of flowers is waking still, 'Tis a lovely sight to see; Them bow their heads at their Maker's will, And close from their reverie; They all are fraught with heaven-born charms, The violet and the bright blue bell, And sweet they lay in Nature's arms, Like gems to stud her coronal; There is the daisy with its simple lore, Rearing its head in a lonely spot, On the streamlet's side, I love it more, For...

Book Description
Excerpt from Legends and Lyrics: A Book of Verses The lights extinguished, by the hearth I leant, Half weary with a listless discontent. The flickering giant-shadows, gathering near, Closed round me with a dim and silent fear. All dull, all dark; save when the leaping flame, Glancing, lit up a Picture's ancient frame. Above the hearth it hung. Perhaps the night, My foolish tremors, or the gleaming light, Lent power to that Portrait dark and quaint A Portrait such as Rembrandt loved to paint The likeness of a Nun. I seemed to trace A world of sorrow in the patient face, In the thin hands folded across her breast Its own and the room's shadow hid the rest. I gazed and dreamed, and the dull embers stirred, Till an old legend that I once had heard Came back to me; linked to the mystic gloom Of that dark Picture in the ghostly room.
