The influence of stimulated scattering on laser intensity in fiber optic waveguides is examined. Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in long, multimode optical waveguides is found to generate a Stokes beam that propagates in the fiber LP01 mode. Additionally, the same process is found to combine multiple laser beams into a single spatially coherent source. Limitations in beam cleanup and combining are also investigated to identify ways to overcome them. The last portion of the dissertation theoretically examines suppression of stimulated Raman scattering in fibers to eliminate the restriction this imposes on the power of a fiber laser or amplifier. The suppression was modeled using both a holmium dopant and adding a long period grating to the fiber. Both methods were shown to have a significant effect on the SRS threshold.

A developed formalism for analyzing the power scaling of diffraction limited fiber lasers and amplifiers is applied to a wider range of materials. Limits considered include thermal rupture, thermal lensing, melting of the core, stimulated Raman scattering, stimulated Brillouin scattering, optical damage, bend induced limits on core diameter and limits to coupling of pump diode light into the fiber. For conventional fiber lasers based upon silica, the single aperture, diffraction limited power limit was found to be 36.6kW. This is a hard upper limit that results from an interaction of the stimulated Raman scattering with thermal lensing. This result is dependent only upon physical constants of the material and is independent of the core diameter or fiber length. Other materials will have different results both in terms of ultimate power out and which of the many limits is the determining factor in the results. Materials considered include silica doped with Tm and Er, YAG and YAG based ceramics and Yb doped phosphate glass. Pros and cons of the various materials and their current state of development will be assessed. In particular the impact of excess background loss on laser efficiency is discussed.

Thulium- and holmium-doped fiber lasers (TDF and HDF) emitting at 2 micron offer unique benefits and applications compared to common ytterbium-doped 1 micron lasers. This dissertation details the concepts, limitations, design, and performance of four 2 micron fiber laser systems. While these lasers were developed for various end-uses, they also provide further insight into two major power scaling limitations. The first limitation is optical nonlinearities: specifically stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and modulation instability (MI). The second limitation is thermal failure due to inefficient pump conversion. First, a 21.5 W single-frequency, single-mode laser with adjustable output from continuous-wave to nanosecond pulses is developed. Measuring the SBS threshold versus pulse duration enables the Brillouin gain coefficient and gain bandwidth to be determined at 2 micron. Second, a 23 W spectrally-broadband, nanosecond pulsed laser is constructed for materials processing applications. The temporally incoherent multi-kW peak power pulses can also efficiently produce MI and supercontinuum generation by adjusting the input spectral linewidth. Third, the measured performance of in-band pumped TDF and HDF lasers are compared with simulations. HDF displays low efficiencies, which is explained by including ion clustering in the simulations. The TDF operates with impressive [greater than]90% slope efficiencies. Based on this result, a system design for [greater than]1 kW average power TDF amplifier is described. The designed final amplifier will be in-band pumped to enable high efficiency and low thermal load. The amplifier efficiency, operating bandwidth, thermal load, and nonlinear limits are modeled and analyzed to provide a framework for execution. Overall, this dissertation provides further insight and understanding on the various processes that limit power scaling of 2 micron fiber lasers.
