Este libro es una monografía sobre la influencia que ejercen los recursos formativos de los individuos en sus trayectorias laborales iniciales. Un tema que en la actualidad tiene un interés especial, si se tiene en cuenta cómo han ido evolucionando las relaciones entre educación y mercado de trabajo. En los últimos quince años, hemos asistido a cambios importantes en el sistema de transición entre educación y trabajo. En este nuevo escenario, saber cómo se han configurado los procesos de movilidad laboral y cómo han influido los recursos formativos de los individuos en tales procesos constituyen cuestiones de gran relevancia para el conocimiento de las dinámicas de inserción laboral en el marco de la sociedad española actual. El estudio aborda estas cuestiones con planteamientos novedosos en el terreno teórico y metodológico. En el terreno teórico se consideran los desarrollos más recientes sobre movilidad y logro laboral. En el terreno metodológico, la perspectiva longitudinal ha aportado componentes originales, como es el propio diseño de cuestionarios de historias laborales y la aplicación de técnicas de análisis específicas. Los resultados obtenidos responden a la búsqueda de varios objetivos. En primer lugar, en el libro se analizan los determinantes del propio logro educativo. Seguidamente se aborda la entrada al mercado de trabajo y la obtención del primer empleo. El estudio de las prácticas de los empleadores en materia de selección y contratación de personal es otro de los objetivos del trabajo. Asimismo, se analiza la formación adquirida en la empresa y su influencia en las primeras etapas laborales. Por último, los análisis efectuados han permitido establecer los factores que intervienen en las diferentes pautas de movilidad laboral observadas. El trabajo pone de manifiesto la presencia de factores estructurales e institucionales en los procesos de inserción laboral, que van a condicionar la influencia de los recursos formativos en el acceso al empleo y en la movilidad inicial.

The sociological study of economic activity has witnessed a significant resurgence. Recent texts have chronicled economic sociology's nineteenth-century origins while pointing to the importance of context and power in economic life, yet the field lacks a clear understanding of the role that concepts at different levels of abstraction play in its organization. Economic Sociology fills this critical gap by surveying the current state of the field while advancing a framework for further theoretical development. Alejandro Portes examines economic sociology's principal assumptions, key explanatory concepts, and selected research sites. He argues that economic activity is embedded in social and cultural relations, but also that power and the unintended consequences of rational purposive action must be factored in when seeking to explain or predict economic behavior.
