Alfred Raworth's Electric Southern Railway
Author: Peter Steer
Publisher: Pen and Sword Transport
ISBN: 1526778424
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 703
Book Description
The Southern Railway between 1923 and 1939 was the only British company to carry out a sustained programme of electrification which became known as the Southern Electric. Unlike many recent projects, each incremental step was completed on time and within budget. This successful project was more impressive as it was achieved during a period of economic stagnation (including the ‘great depression’) and despite government disapproval of the method of electrification. The driving force behind this endeavor was the railway’s general manager, Sir Herbert Walker, but at his side was his electrical engineer, Alfred Raworth, the man one journalist described as an ‘electrification genius’. Alfred Raworth’s career began working with his father the eminent consulting engineer and entrepreneur, John Smith Raworth. Following the collapse of his father’s business Alfred joined the railway industry and devised an ambitious and innovative electrification design. This was discarded when the railways of southern England were ‘grouped’ into the Southern Railway after which he took responsibility for the implementation of the electrification schemes. With Walker’s retirement in 1937, those who continued to support steam traction took the policy lead. A marginalised Raworth retired but was later to witness the fruition of many of his discarded ideas.

Advances in Cryogenic Engineering
Author: K.D. Timmerhaus
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461398746
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 1142
Book Description
The 1987 joint Cryogenic Engineering Conference/International Cryogenic Materials Conference was held at the Pheasant Run Resort, St. Charles, lliinois from June 14 to 18. Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, located a few kilometers from Pheasant Run, was the host for this conference. There is a great deal of cryogenic research and development underway at Fermilab and many applications of cryogenic materials and systems are in rou tine, daily use at the Tevatron. The technical program for the joint conference had over 300 invited and contributed papers from many different countries. The CEC board and I have tried to dramatically shorten the publication time of this volume of Advances in Cryogenic Engineering. In order to help meet the goal of the February publication, I asked the reviewers to complete their reviews before leaving Pheasant Run, after the conference. I would like to thank all of the reviewers for their prompt and throughtful reviews. I very much appreciate the authors following the prescribed format and responding quickly to my requests for revisions.

Underground Electric Haulage
Author: Ludger M. Szklarski
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483157873
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 425
Book Description
Underground Electric Haulage focuses on the locomotives used in modern mine railways. The locomotives of many different types are used for such underground operations as gathering at the loading points, shunting at the pit bottom, hauling man-riding vehicles, but primarily hauling material cars on the main haulage roads of the mine. The locomotives for underground haulage fall into three main groups: (1) compressed-air locomotives, (2) internal-combustion locomotives, and (3) electric locomotives. So far as electric haulage is concerned, the locomotives may be divided into two types: (a) trolley locomotives and (b) storage-battery locomotives. Besides these two main types there are also various combinations, such as trolley locomotives with batteries, cable-reel locomotives with a reel for the automatic unwinding and winding up of the cable, and trolley locomotives fitted additionally with the cable-reel equipment. The book is organized into three parts. Parts I and II discusses trolley locomotives and storage-battery locomotives, respectively, while Part III deals with calculations in mine traction engineering.
