Highway 74-76, the major east-west collector road linking Wilmington to western parts of the state. The highway passes through the Town of Lake Waccamaw, at which point it carries about cars per day. Wilmington lies about thirty-five miles east of the lake. To the northwest, Charlotte is about one hundred and twenty miles away, Raleigh about ninety miles, Fayetteville about sixty miles, and Lumberton lies about forty miles away. The South Carolina State line is only twenty-five miles from Lake Waccamaw with Florence located about eighty-five miles due west of the lake. Within a fifty-mile radius of Lake Waccamaw, the total population is estimated to be about or of the State's people. Both New Hanover County and Cumberland County, which contain the cities of Wilmington and Fayetteville, respectively, are each responsible for more than twenty-one percent of the area's population.
