Rapid growth, unmanageable cities, urban crisis, macrocephali... The cities of west Africa are no longer ‘plannable’ – at least not using traditional urban development tools. Without negating the importance of participatory processes in city creation, it nonetheless seems crucial to return to city plans and models, to what cities convey, and how they are built. But to understand the city in all its depth and richness, we must also hit the streets. The West African City proposes a dual perspective. At the urban scale, it analyses historical trajectories, spatial development, and urban planning documents to highlight the major trends beyond the plans. At the second level – that of public space – the street is discussed as the city’s lifeblood. By innovating approaches and testing new methods, The West African City offers an unconventional look at Nouakchott, Dakar and Abidjan, the three study sites for this investigation. The city of today, in Africa or elsewhere, must re-examine its many social, economic, cultural, political, and spatial dimensions; for this, urban research has begun challenging its own methods. Long on the margins of both scholarly and policy concerns, the countries of the West African Sahel have recently attracted world attention, primarily as a key battleground in the global 'war on terror'. This book moves beyond this narrow focus, providing a multidimensional and interdisciplinary assessment of the region in all of its complexity. The focus is on the six countries at the heart of the Sahelian geographic space: Senegal, Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Chad. Collectively, the chapters explore the commonalities and interconnections that link these countries and their fates, while also underscoring their diversity and the variations in their current realities. The Sahel today is at an important crossroads, under multiple pressures of diverse kinds: environmental, political, demographic, and economic, as well as rapidly changing social and religious dynamics. "Ce volume aborde des phénomènes de mobilité spatiale rarement pris en considération dans les débats actuels en sciences sociales où elle est considérée comme un "principe général de la modernité" (BonB et al. 2004) et célébrée comme un nouveau paradigme. À l'exemple de l'espace Sahara-Sahel, les auteurs traitent ici de variantes "banales" de la mobilité et du mouvement dans la mesure où elles représentent des formes élémentaires de recherche de subsistance et de revenu. Ces formes sont le contraire de ce que l'on peut assimiler à des stratégies de "libre choix" ou à des expressions d'une individualité moderne. Une des particularités des contributions présentées ici est d'analyser diverses formes de mobilité spatiale, tant régionales qu'à travers des exemples classiques de migration européenne, non seulement en fonction de leurs effets économiques sur l'individu et la collectivité d'origine mais aussi des implications locales et régionales qu'elles génèrent. L'objectif de cet ouvrage est ainsi d'attirer l'attention sur le fait que ces mouvements présentent un potentiel inhérent de changement et de développement. Les textes ont été rédigés à partir des communications présentées à un atelier de travail interdisciplinaire financé par la Fondation allemande pour la Recherche (DFG), à Bamako en février 2011. West African teachers and professors who are appropriating information and communication technologies (ICT) are making it part and parcel of education and everyday life. In Mali and beyond, they adapt ICT to their milieus and work as cultural agents, mediating between technology and society. They yearn to use ICT to make education more relevant to life, facilitate and enhance African participation in global debates and scholarly production, and evolve how Africa and Africans are projected and perceived. In sum, educators are harnessing ICT for its transformative possibilities. The changes apparent in student-teacher relations (more interactive) and classrooms (more dialogical) suggest that ICT can be a catalyst for pedagogical change, including in document-poor contexts and ones weighed down by legacies of colonialism. Learning from the perspectives and experiences of educators pioneering the use of ICT in education in Africa can inform educational theory, practice and policy and deepen understandings of the concept of appropriation as a process of cultural change.
