Selon l'Organisation mondiale de la Santé, 80% de la population africaine a toujours recours à la médecine traditionnelle pour les soins de santé primaires (OMS, 2001) ; d'où l'intérêt que suscite cette médecine au sein des Organisations africaines et internationales. Notre étude porte sur l'activité des tradipraticiens dans la ville d'Abidjan, la capitale économique de la Côte d'Ivoire, et leurs rapports avec les agents de santé moderne et la population. Du 15 novembre 2009 au 15 avril 2010, des enquêtes ont été conduites auprès de praticiens des deux médecines, de malades et de non-malades rencontrés dans des établissements sanitaires de la ville d'Abidjan. Soixante pour-cent des tradipraticiens se déclaraient phytothérapeutes ayant acquis leurs connaissances principalement par transmission. La gratuité des consultations concernait 58% d'entre eux. 65% ont répondu avoir déjà reçu des patients adressés par des agents de santé moderne, tandis que 47% disaient collaborer avec ces derniers. Tous les malades et non-malades avaient déjà reçu des traitements traditionnels et étaient majoritairement favorables à l'intégration de la médecine traditionnelle au sein du système de santé ivoirien. Ils dénonçaient le coût élevé des soins médicaux et se disaient peu satisfaits de la relation médecin/patient. La consommation de médications traditionnelles concernait 37% des agents de santé moderne. 67% d'entre eux étaient favorables à une collaboration entre les deux médecines, mais seulement 8% déclaraient collaborer, en pratique, avec les tradipraticiens. Les deux tiers du personnel de santé ignoraient l'existence du Programme National de Promotion de la Médecine Traditionnelle. Les faiblesses de la médecine traditionnelle et les réticences des agents de santé moderne constituent des obstacles à une collaboration effective. Une revalorisation de la médecine traditionnelle ivoirienne est nécessaire pour tirer le meilleur profit de ses atouts et, ainsi, mieux répondre aux besoins de santé des populations.
