Book Description

Book Description
The bibliography lists the literature and State practice on the question of recognition in international law for the last two hundred years. It contains books and articles, ie. contributions to journals and other collected works such as Festschriften and Encyclopaedias, as well as (published and unpublished) theses, pamphlets, compilations of diplomatic documents and case notes. As many of the monographs on recognition in international law will not be available in all libraries, book reviews have been included in the bibliography in order to enable the user to decide whether it may be advisable to order a certain work by inter-library loan. Its 4,500 entries are arranged systematically according to subject categories in fourteen main sections. Each main section is further subdivided with ever-increasing specificity into sub-sections on codification, codification attempts, general studies, studies of certain recognition questions and studies of specific recognition cases. The bibliography employs a broad meaning of recognition. It is not restricted to the question of status of an authority or entity in international law but encompasses also the question of relations with it. As many of the recognition cases must be considered, and can only be understood, against their historic, political and sometimes even economic background, the bibliography includes not only purely legal treaties but also publications of a primarily historical, political or economic content which incidentally deal with aspects of recognition in international law. This is reflected by the titles of the 730 journals from more than 50 countries in 20 different languages which have been used to compile the bibliography. The bibliography contains both an author and a comprehensive subject index to enable users to locate works of a particular writer or a specific problem.

DES LEUR ORIGINE, LES RELATIONS FRANCO-CHINOISES SOUFFRENT DE DEUX HANDICAPS: TROP DE CONFLITS IDEOLOGIQUES ET PAS ASSEZ DE LIENS ECONOMIQUES, CECI, SUPERPOSE A LA BIPLORISATION DES RELATIONS INTERNATIONALES ET A LA GUERRE D'INDOCHINE, DEFINIT UN CADRE POUR LES RAPPORTS ENTRE LA FRANCE ET LA CHINE POPULAIRE DE 1949 ET 1955. CES RELATIONS ONT PARCOURU TROIS ETAPES CARACTERISEES RESPECTIVEMENT PAR L'HESITATION FRANCAISE SUR LA RECONNAISSANCE DU NOUVEAU GOUVERNEMENT CHINOIS (JAN, 1949-JAN,1950). LE SCEPTICISME MUTUEL SUR LES ECHANGES EN L'ABSENCE DES RELATIONS DIPLOMATIQUES (JAN.1950-AVRIL 1954), ET L'AMELIORATION LIMITEE DES RELATIONS BILATERALES (AVRIL 1954-FIN 1955). L'ETAT DES RELATIONS FRANCO-CHINOISES DE CETTE PERIODE S'EXPLIQUE TANT PAR LES FACTEURS OF L'EPOQUE QUE PAR LES VOLONTES DES ACTEURS. PENDANT QUE LES INTERACTIONS ENTRE LES FACTEURS POLITIQUE, ECONOMIQUE, GEOGRAPHIQUE, STRATEGIQUE ET IDEOLOGIQUE CREENT UN CLIMAT PEU FAVORABLES POUR UN RAPPROCHEMENT FRANCO-CHINOIS, LES ACTEURS DES DEUX COTES SONT VICTIMES DE QUELQUES CLICHES A L'EGARD L'UN DE L'AUTRE. POUR REPARER LES HANDICAPS HISTORIQUES ET DEVELOPPER LES RELATIONS ENTRE LES DEUX GRANDS PAYS AUSSI DIFFERENTS COMME LA FRANCE ET LA CHINE, UNE COMPREHENSION MUTUELLE EST INDISPENSABLE. OR, JUSQU'A NOS JOURS, CETTE COMPREHENSION LAISSE BEAUCOUP A DESIRER.

China has long been an object of fascination for the French, who celebrated theirannee de la Chine in 2004. Symptomatic of that fascination are the movements into China made by groups as diverse as the Jesuits, who arrived inL'Empire du Milieu in the late seventeenth century, and theTel Quel intellectuals, whose will to political pilgrimage took th

Book Description
The essays in this volume examine selected national, regional European, and international policies of Charles de Gaulle, giving consideration to their significance in his own time, and today. Not everything de Gaulle did withstands the test of time. Nor, obviously, was everything beyond criticism in his own time. Nonetheless, a main finding, in the words of one essayist, is that de Gaulle had an 'uncanny sense of where history was going' and the skill to position his country accordingly. De Gaulle also stands as a testament to the power of individuals in history, a somewhat unfashionable viewpoint in modern university curriculums. Today, when France's destiny appears increasingly to depend on structures and institutions beyond its national control, including a Europe weakened by the sovereign debt crisis, and a global economic system accountable to no one, it seems timely to reconsider the record of the twentieth century's greatest Frenchman, whose skill at dealing with the problems of his time can inspire today's generation of politicians and statesmen.
