La médecine traditionnelle est un concept très complexe qui relève d'un ensemble de caractères matériels, intellectuels, moraux et artistiques d'une société donnée. Ses pratiques varient grandement d'un pays à l'autre, d'une région à l'autre, et sont fortement influencées par de nombreux facteurs comme la culture, l'histoire, les ethnies, la situation sociale, etc. La médecine traditionnelle sénégalaise n'en est pas une exception, issues des diverses influences culturelles et religieuses ayant marqué son histoire, plusieurs systèmes thérapeutiques coexistent au Sénégal. Ils apportent des réponses différentes aux dimensions multiples de la maladie, à travers des logiques ou pratiques curatives spécifiques et des champs d'intervention très variables. La médecine traditionnelle sénégalaise est indissociable à la religion et à l'appartenance ethnique. Que ce soit l'islamisme, le fétichisme ou autre, ils sont tous conçus sur des bases de facteurs magico-religieux avec des prédominances de telle ou telle croyance en fonction de l'appartenance ethnique, religieuse et culturelle. Malgré leur importance indéniable, la médecine traditionnelle sénégalaise ne se réduit pas au seul support magico-religieux, car la grande majorité des recettes traditionnelles et des traitements traditionnels sont à base de plantes médicinales. Des nombreuses plantes médicinales du Sénégal ont fait l'objet d'études pharmacologiques et/ou scientifiques permettant de justifier leurs utilisations traditionnelles. Pourtant, malgré les nombreuses études, il en existe beaucoup d'autres ayant effectivement des effets thérapeutiques mais non démontrés scientifiquement où justifiés par des propriétés pharmacologiques. La disparition progressive des véritables tradipraticiens faisant place au charlatanisme et la dégradation de leurs connaissances ont été constatées dans tout l'Afrique de l'Ouest. Ce constat peut être facilement amputé à la mode de transmission orale des savoirs africains.
