La maltraitance familiale est un sujet d'actualité fort douloureux. A cet titre, elle constitue également un terrain polémique où se croisent nombre de modèles théoriques, de stratégies d'interventions et d'idéologies diverses. L'auteur défend ici la thèse selon laquelle la maltraitance est en fait un phénomène beaucoup plus étendu que ce que nous pensons habituellement dans la mesure où elle est avant constituée par un certain dysfonctionnement des règles relationnelles. Abordant la maltraitance familiale comme un phénomène humain, l'auteur évite ainsi les préjugés qui la diabolise, l’animalise ou la masculinise.
