Forgé dans les milieux académiques et féministes états-uniens à la fin des années 1960, le concept de genre a enrichi les recherches en sciences sociales par une épistémologie permettant de dénaturaliser les différences, les inégalités et les identités sexuées. Controversé lors de ses diffusions, objet de contestation par nombre de mobilisations conservatrices, il est toutefois devenu routinier, comme le montre la diversité de ses usages dans des programmes d'action publique ou "d'aide au développement", ainsi que l'affirmation d'un champ académique internationalisé des études sur le genre. Selon des temporalités correspondant à des logiques nationales, le concept a été approprié au gré de la promotion du gender mainstreaming par les organismes multilatéraux depuis la quatrième conférence mondiale sur les femmes (1995). Devenu catégorie d'intervention publique, il fait aussi partie du langage et des répertoires des groupes militants. Ainsi, mobilisé à toutes les échelles (locales, nationales, internationales) par des acteurs aussi contrastés que l'ONU et ses agences, l'Union européenne, des gouvernements et des municipalités, des associations locales et des milieux académiques, le genre connaît aujourd'hui un véritable éclatement. L'ouvrage interroge les modalités situées de ses circulations et de ses traductions en actions publiques, militantes, scientifiques et développe des analyses critiques de son succès globalisé et globalisant.

The increasingly globalized circulation and interdependence of literary practices calls for a revision of the history of national and continental genres. This volume focuses attention from a transareal perspective on the growing diversity of genres in the move towards cultural globalization. It is less interested in the increasing homogenization of genres and of reader expectations resulting from globalized structures of communication, but rather in a new heterogeneity of literary forms which arises from the processes of hybridization, transculturation, creolization and cultural transfer. Focused on the relation between processes of globalization and literary genres, this volume intervenes in the prevalent notions of globalization, literary history, genre, and the novel. Using both close reading and world history, both literary criticism and political theory, the book is a timely intervention in the debates about world, postcolonial, and transnational literature as they have been intensified by critical globalization studies, world-systems analysis, Bourdieuan sociology, and cosmopolitanism studies. It contends that globalization, far from starting in recent decades, has a long and complex history, not unlike the history of literature itself, meaning that when we speak of globalization and literature, we in effect invoke the entire history of literature. Essays examine literary genres in relation to broader historical processes, connecting the present state of globalization to such key world-historic events as the early modern geographical and scientific explorations, the Enlightenment, the expansions of modernity in the long nineteenth and twentieth centuries, postmodernity and postcoloniality, and contemporary counter-hegemonic movements. This book provides an insightful approach to understanding the contemporary circulations of feminist repertoires and shows how the international/transnational circulations of gender are interconnected, even coextensive, with the globalization process itself. Fed by a shared reflexivity on relations among activist groups, state institutions, and international actors involved in the production and dissemination of contemporary norms dealing with gender, each chapter shares methodological premises and studies the circulation of gender-related norms and knowledge in situ and by varying standpoints.
