Se debería ofrecer no sólo una descripción del andaluz como medio de comunicación y como modalidad lingüística del español sino también una descripción de la forma de ser y de pensar, es decir la realidad lingüística y su identidad cultural, que a través del lenguaje el pueblo andaluz manifiesta. Muchos autores aluden, por ejemplo, al conformismo de la identidad andaluza, a su carácter de “tierra vieja y sabia, síntesis de culturas” (Lamíquiz 1985, 30) o al tópico de la Andalucía gitana y flamenca, llena de gracia y de ingenio, a su expresividad y barroquismo, y naturalmente a su milenaria pereza, producto del clima, o a su tendencia a la hipérbole y exageración. Mi intención es describir en este trabajo, sin pretensión a la clarificación exhaustiva, el camino del desarrollo de las hablas andaluzas, demostrar de que viene y por que fue influida la identidad lingüística andaluza. [...] 2. La identidad lingüística andaluza El español hablado en Andalucía posee determinadas peculiaridades respecto al español del resto de España. La presencia árabe en esta región duro más de setecientos ochenta años, con lo que las peculiaridades del andaluz podrían deberse al influjo del árabe, tan presente en la identidad cultural andaluza. Por ejemplo la presencia masiva en andaluz de una pronunciación aspirada, que afecta tanto a la propia consonante h derivada de una antigua f-inicial latina, como a las consonantes j y g, como a la consonante –s final de silaba o palabra, hacen pensar en cierta semejanza con las consonantes velares y faríngeas del árabe. Pero ningún rasgo de la pronunciación andaluza se puede derivar de alguna característica de la lengua árabe, sino que se pueden explicar perfectamente por la propia evolución interna del castellano y, además, para repetir, los rasgos típicos del andaluz no se dan en toda Andalucía, no afectan por igual a todos los hablantes y ni siquiera los tenidos por más representativos pueden ser considerados como exclusivos del andaluz. [...] 5. La invasión árabe; la cuestión del mozárabe En 711 cayó el poder visigodo y los musulmanes invadieron la Península Ibérica. A partir de entonces y hasta la Toma de Granada en 1492, los territorios peninsulares bajo poder islámico se denominaron genéricamente Al-Ándalus, cuya historia fue una sucesión de diversos estados musulmanes. A lot of what we know about “exotic languages” is owed to the linguistic activities of missionaries. They had the languages put into writing, described their grammar and lexicon, and worked towards a standardization, which often came with Eurocentric manipulation. Colonial missionary work as intellectual (religious) conquest formed part of the Europeans' political colonial rule, although it sometimes went against the specific objectives of the official administration. In most cases, it did not help to stop (or even reinforced) the displacement and discrimination of those languages, despite oftentimes providing their very first (sometimes remarkable, sometimes incorrect) descriptions. This volume presents exemplary studies on Catholic and Protestant missionary linguistics, in the framework of the respective colonial situation and policies under Spanish, German, or British rule. The contributions cover colonial contexts in Latin America, Africa, and Asia across the centuries. They demonstrate how missionaries dealing with linguistic analyses and descriptions cooperated with colonial institutions and how their linguistic knowledge contributed to European domination.

When the first European missionaries arrived on other continents, it was decided that the indigenous languages would be used as the means of christianization. There emerged the need to produce grammars and dictionaries of those languages. The study of this linguistic material has so far not received sufficient attention in the field of linguistic historiography.
