La penetración de las tecnologías de la información en los diversos ámbitos de la vida cotidiana está produciendo profundos cambios en todos los sectores; en algunos, particularmente en la televisión digital, se están viviendo momentos decisivos que conformarán un nuevo sistema comunicativo social. En este contexto, las televisiones locales serán unos agentes privilegiados para la formación de ese nuevo sistema audiovisual más acorde con las sociedades actuales, pero para conseguirlo es necesario acabar con la situación de incertidumbre normativa en que la actitud errática de la administración les ha obligado a sobrevivir desde que hace ya veinte años aparecieron las primeras televisiones locales en nuestro país. El libro hace un recorrido por la historia de la televisión, analizando el contexto socioeconómico, político y comunicativo en que se implantó y se ha venido desarrollando para caracterizar su momento actual. El texto se complementa con el informe detallado de la situación en que se encuentra el conjunto de las televisiones locales que operan en la provincia de Castellón, como muestra significativa de la crítica posición en que está el sector para afrontar la inminente transición a la TDT (televisión digital terrestre) que se le ha impuesto con tanta urgencia y que va acabar por determinar el equilibrio y la pluralidad de nuestro sistema comunicativo durante los próximos años y, en definitiva, el modelo de desarrollo futuro de nuestra sociedad.

The is the first major study to examine the implications of different welfare regimes for the experience of unemployment in Europe. It addresses three central questions. How far do such regimes protect unemployed people from poverty and financial hardship? Do they reduce or accentuate thetendencies for progressive marginalization from employment that may arise from motivational change, skill loss or the growth of discriminatory barriers? Finally, to what extent do they affect the social integration of unemployed people, in particular with respect to their social networks andpsychological well-being? The book is based on a major cross-cultural research programme funded by the European Union. In addition to systematic comparison of national data, it uses a new important data source - the European Community Household Panel - which provides directly comparable information for most of the EUcountries. The study shows that institutional and cultural differences have vital implications for the experience of unemployment. While welfare policies affect in an important way the pervasiveness of poverty, it is above all the patterns of family structure and the culture of sociability in a society thataffect vulnerability to social isolation. The book concludes by developing a new perspective for understanding the risk of social exclusion.

There has been a tendency amongst feminists to see domestic work as the great leveller, a common burden imposed on all women equally by patriarchy. This unique study of migrant domestic workers in the North uncovers some uncomfortable facts about the race and class aspects of domestic oppression. Based on original research, it looks at the racialisation of paid domestic labour in the North - a phenomenon which challenges feminsim and political theory at a fundamental level. The book opens with an exploration of the public/private divide and an overview of the debates on women and power. The author goes on to provide a map of employment patterns of migrant women in domestic work in the North; she describes the work they perform, their living and working conditions and their employment relations. A chapter on the US explores the connections between slavery and contemporary domestic service while a section on commodification examines the extent to which migrant domestic workers are not selling their labour but their whole personhood. The book also looks at the role of the Other in managing dirt, death and pollution and the effects of the feminisation of the labour market - as middle class white women have greater presence in the public sphere, they are more likely to push responsibility for domestic work onto other women. In its depiction of the treatment of women from the South by women in the North, the book asks some difficult questions about the common bond of womanhood. Packed with information on the numbers of migrant women working as domestics, the racism, immigration or employment legislation that constrains their lives, and testimonies from the workers themselves, this is the most comprehensive study of migrant domestic workers available.

New technologies?digitalization, artificial intelligence, and machine learning?are changing the way work gets done at an unprecedented rate. Helping people adapt to a fast-changing world of work and ameliorating its deleterious impacts will be the defining challenge of our time. What are the gender implications of this changing nature of work? How vulnerable are women’s jobs to risk of displacement by technology? What policies are needed to ensure that technological change supports a closing, and not a widening, of gender gaps? This SDN finds that women, on average, perform more routine tasks than men across all sectors and occupations?tasks that are most prone to automation. Given the current state of technology, we estimate that 26 million female jobs in 30 countries (28 OECD member countries, Cyprus, and Singapore) are at a high risk of being displaced by technology (i.e., facing higher than 70 percent likelihood of being automated) within the next two decades. Female workers face a higher risk of automation compared to male workers (11 percent of the female workforce, relative to 9 percent of the male workforce), albeit with significant heterogeneity across sectors and countries. Less well-educated and older female workers (aged 40 and above), as well as those in low-skill clerical, service, and sales positions are disproportionately exposed to automation. Extrapolating our results, we find that around 180 million female jobs are at high risk of being displaced globally. Policies are needed to endow women with required skills; close gender gaps in leadership positions; bridge digital gender divide (as ongoing digital transformation could confer greater flexibility in work, benefiting women); ease transitions for older and low-skilled female workers.
