Book Description
A panel of leading experts integrate the latest findings from basic and clinical science to create a comprehensive treatment of the processes by which the brain acts as an endocrine organ, not only to control hormonal functions, but also to maintain homeostasis and regulate behavior. The authors-recognized both as leaders in their fields and as skilled teachers-provide systematic coverage of the analytical, anatomical, functional, clinical, and pathological aspects of neuroendocrinology. Topics range from the interactions between the nervous and endocrine systems to the regulation of reproduction, development, metabolism, fluid balance, and biological rhythms. Neuroendocrinology in Physiology and Medicine offers an unprecedented marriage of clinical and basic knowledge that has been missing from classical neuroscience, endocrinology, and physiology texts. It will teach today's medical students and serve researchers as a valuable reference to this rapidly growing field.

A Compendium of Continuous Lattices
Author: G. Gierz
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642676782
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 390
Book Description
A mathematics book with six authors is perhaps a rare enough occurrence to make a reader ask how such a collaboration came about. We begin, therefore, with a few words on how we were brought to the subject over a ten-year period, during part of which time we did not all know each other. We do not intend to write here the history of continuous lattices but rather to explain our own personal involvement. History in a more proper sense is provided by the bibliography and the notes following the sections of the book, as well as by many remarks in the text. A coherent discussion of the content and motivation of the whole study is reserved for the introduction. In October of 1969 Dana Scott was lead by problems of semantics for computer languages to consider more closely partially ordered structures of function spaces. The idea of using partial orderings to correspond to spaces of partially defined functions and functionals had appeared several times earlier in recursive function theory; however, there had not been very sustained interest in structures of continuous functionals. These were the ones Scott saw that he needed. His first insight was to see that - in more modern terminology - the category of algebraic lattices and the (so-called) Scott-continuous functions is cartesian closed.

[a] treasure house of material for students and teachersalike . . . can be dipped into regularly for inspiration and ideas. It deserves to become a classic." —London Times Higher Education Supplement "The author succeeds in his goal of serving the needs of theundergraduate population who want to see mathematics in action, andthe mathematics used is extensive and provoking." —SIAM Review "Each chapter discusses a wealth of examples ranging from oldstandards . . . to novelty . . . each model is developedcritically, analyzed critically, and assessed critically." —Mathematical Reviews A Concrete Approach to Mathematical Modelling providesin-depth and systematic coverage of the art and science ofmathematical modelling. Dr. Mesterton-Gibbons shows how themodelling process works and includes fascinating examples fromvirtually every realm of human, machine, natural, and cosmicactivity. Various models are found throughout the book, includinghow to determine how fast cars drive through a tunnel, how manyworkers industry should employ, the length of a supermarketcheckout line, and more. With detailed explanations, exercises, andexamples demonstrating real-life applications in diverse fields, this book is the ultimate guide for students and professionals inthe social sciences, life sciences, engineering, statistics, economics, politics, business and management sciences, and everyother discipline in which mathematical modelling plays a role.

Unique Solutions for Strategic Games
Author: Werner Güth
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642483674
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 211
Book Description
This book develops a general solution concept for strategic games which resolves strategic uncertainty completely. The concept is described by a mathematically formulated solution procedure and illustrated by applying it to many interesting examples. A long nontechnical introduction tries to survey and to discuss the more technical parts of the book. The book and especially the introduction provide firm and consistent guidance for scholars of game theory. There are many open problems which could inspire further research efforts.
