Perceptions of Employers about HIV/AIDS in Micro and Small Enterprises Employing Women Workers
Author: Trudie Kaniki
Publisher: OSSREA
ISBN:
Category : AIDS (Disease)
Languages : en
Pages : 58
Book Description
HIV/AIDS has a negative impact on economic activity. This study assesses the impact of HIV on the small enterprise sector in Harare, which employs a majority of women, through the perceptions of persons employed in this sector. It reports that small or micro-enterprises are perceived to have a relatively low incidence of HIV, because of the predominance of women working in the sector. Men are perceived to be at greater risk, on account of their perceived promiscuity, but the study finds that women are also affected through absenteeism and death. It concludes that there is a high level of awareness of HIV amongst these groups. However cultural barriers are making it dificult for women to protect themselves from the disease, in spite of the prevention strategies which many of these enterprises have in place.
