Book Description
*Includes pictures *Includes excerpts of contemporary articles about Petty's races *Includes a bibliography for further reading "I'd rather be called King than other things I've been called." - Richard Petty A person may not know anything about baseball, but they still likely know the name Babe Ruth. Others may not watch football, but they still likely know who Tom Brady is. And most people have never been to a stock car race, but they've likely heard of Richard Petty, along with his simple but fitting nickname: "The King." Of course, there are plenty of reasons why Petty is so legendary, and why "The King" is more than merely a nickname. The name is an acknowledgment that Richard Petty is quite possibly the greatest driver in the history of stock car racing, and while some may debate that, nobody can argue that he is the winningest driver in the history of National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing-sanctioned events. Over the course of 34 years, Petty won 200 races in his career, was the first driver to win the NASCAR Cup Championship seven times (the others being Dale Earnhardt and Jimmie Johnson), and to date is the only driver to win under different points systems. He won NASCAR's biggest race, the Daytona 500, a record seven times, and he holds the record for the most wins in a single season (27 out of 49 races in 1967). Petty holds the record for number of starts from the pole (127), number of Top 10 finishes (over 700), and total starts (1,184). Such was his standing that he was one of the three drivers (along with Dale Earnhardt and Junior Johnson) inducted into the inaugural class of the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2010. Petty has famously claimed that he never actually retired, but simply quit driving, and he remains active in the sport well into his 80s as the owner of Richard Petty Motorsports. He is still a frequent sight on race day in his signature cowboy hat and sunglasses, a look that has made him instantly recognizable over many decades. More than any other person, Richard Petty represents the transition of NASCAR stock car racing from a Southern regional sport to one with an international following. Richard Petty: The Life and Legacy of The King of NASCAR profiles the legendary life and career of NASCAR's most famous driver, both on and off the track. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about Richard Petty like never before.

Book Description
The NASCAR king in both famous and never-before-seen photos Although the late Dale Earnhardt matched Richard Petty's record of seven NASCAR points titles, no one - not Earnhardt nor, most likely, any racer in the future - will approach several of King Richard's career records: 200 NASCAR victories, seven Daytona 500 wins, victories in 10 straight races (1967), 1, 184 races started and 712 Top 10 finishes. In a sport where competitors are idolized, no one before or since has enjoyed as much fame and popularity as Richard Petty. This photo-history focuses on Petty's remarkable career. The son of a North Carolina stock car racing pioneer, Richard Petty knew little beyond cars and racing. Despite a slow start to his racing career, he achieved unprecedented levels of success and took the sport with him into the national spotlight.

Book Description
The first quarter of the 20th century was a time of dramatic change in auto racing, marked by the move from the horseless carriage to the supercharged Grand Prix racer, from the gentleman driver to the well-publicized professional, and from the dusty road course to the autodrome. This history of the evolution of European and American auto racing from 1900 to 1925 examines transatlantic influences, early dirt track racing, and the birth of the twin-cam engine and the straight-eight. It also explores the origins of the Bennett and Vanderbilt races, the early career of "America's Speed King" Barney Oldfield, the rise of the speedway specials from Marmon, Mercer, Stutz and Duesenberg, and developments from Peugeot, Delage, Ballot, Fiat, and Bugatti. This informative work provides welcome insight into a defining period in motorsports.
