Book Description
This British military biography tells the full story of the Lieutenant Colonel who helped turn the 22nd SAS into the world’s leading special forces unit. Despite its successes during World War II, the future of the British Army’s Special Air Service was uncertain for years afterward. In the 1950s, it was resurrected as the 22nd SAS Regiment to take part in the Malayan Emergency, and over time evolved into one of the British military’s most important units. This renaissance was brought about by a small group of highly motivated officers. Of these, Lieutenant Colonel John Woodhouse stood out for his energy, expertise, and courage. Written by an SAS insider, this biography demonstrates how Woodhouse played a pivotal role in transforming the 22nd SAS into an elite fighting force. Woodhouse led the regiment through campaigns in Oman, Borneo, Radfan and South Arabia, as it built its unrivaled reputation. After leaving the Army, Woodhouse became a sought-after counter-terrorist consultant taking an advisory and active role in operations worldwide. While Colonel Sir David Stirling publicly acknowledged Woodhouse as a cofounder of the 22nd SAS, the full story of his role has not been widely recognized. As this fascinating book reveals, without his efforts there would probably be no 22nd SAS today.

Book Description
As a young lieutenant in 1941, David Stirling won a battle against military bureaucracy - he was able, against all odds, to introduce a new concept in fighting. Although it was disbanded after the war, the effectiveness of the Special Air Service resulted in its being re-formed six years later to meet the specialized demands of counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism in a host of limited-intensity conflicts.

Book Description
The vast scope of conservation problems has forced biologists and managers to rely on "surrogate" species to serve as shortcuts to guide their decision making. These species-known by a host of different terms, including indicator, umbrella, and flagship species-act as proxies to represent larger conservation issues, such as the location of biodiversity hotspots or general ecosystem health. Synthesizing an immense body of literature, conservation biologist and field researcher Tim Caro offers systematic definitions of surrogate species concepts, explores biological theories that underlie them, considers how surrogate species are chosen, critically examines evidence for and against their utility, and makes recommendations for their continued use. The book clarifies terminology and contrasts how different terms are used in the real world considers the ecological, taxonomic, and political underpinnings of these shortcuts identifies criteria that make for good surrogate species outlines the circumstances where the application of the surrogate species concept shows promise Conservation by Proxy is a benchmark reference that provides clear definitions and common understanding of the evidence and theory behind surrogate species. It is the first book to review and bring together literature on more than fifteen types of surrogate species, enabling us to assess their role in conservation and offering guidelines on how they can be used most effectively.

Book Description
During the Korean War and the Vietnam War, US Navy Special Warfare units played a variety of vital combat roles amid two of the deadliest conflicts of the Cold War. In Korea, underwater demolition teams (UDTs) surveyed beaches for amphibious operations, cleared sea mines from harbors, conducted seaborne raids against inshore targets, and served as scouts for the infiltration of Korean guerrillas and British Royal Marine Commando raids along the North Korean coast. In South Vietnam, UDTs surveyed beaches and demolished Viet Cong bunkers, supply caches, and river obstacles in the Mekong Delta. The SEALs (Sea Air Land teams) deployed entire platoons into the Mekong Delta and the Rung Sat Special Zone to conduct guerrilla warfare against the Viet Cong that included ambushes, reconnaissance, and capturing leaders and supply caches. In addition, the SEALs also played important roles in the Phoenix Program and in rescuing prisoners of war. Fully illustrated throughout, this study explores how the US Navy's specially trained naval commandos accomplished their missions in Korea and Vietnam.

Book Description
Background about Transcript: My uncle died some 10 years ago now. His son (my cousin) found this transcript in his father’s attic, it was amongst all sorts of letters and paper cuttings and a lot of old bills apparently. I don’t think my cousin even read it. However, sometime last year, at a funeral no less, we got talking and he knew I had always been a bit of a scribbler, so the long and the short of it was that he posted me this transcript and said do with it what I liked. I have taken him at his word, typed it up (mistakes and all) and posted it on the web as an e-book. Originally there was a lot of swear word, but these have been removed to allow it to be published on the web. I would say, it does detract from the original, but unfortunately this is the way it has to be. Having said that there was a lot of bad language and mostly of a gratuitous nature. I will probably put the original on the internet sometime in the future, over 21’s only or whatever. I only fairly recently ended up with this transcript, which was found in my uncle’s possessions after his death some 10 years ago now. With my cousin's permission (who gave me these fifty or so pages) I have retyped them and kept it as near to the original as possible. Unfortunately, I had to remove the swear words to get it published. Was this a real S.A.S. operation? It is unclear to my cousin, why my uncle should have a transcript of a military operation in Northern Ireland from March 1984. The only clue is that my uncle was actually in the SAS, it was long before 1984 it’s true. Infact he was a member of the S.A.S. during the Second World War. It just seems very strange document for my uncle to have and not tell anyone, because he wasn’t a quiet man, not in his later years at any rate. The bottom line is that no one knows if this is true or not and mainly because of this, I have deliberately not put my name to this, or indeed mentioned my uncle or cousin by name. The fact is that we may well be asked questions which we simply don’t, and never will, have the answers to.

Book Description
Elephants are gray. Pigs are pink. Only the chameleon has no color of his own. He is purple like the heather, yellow like a lemon, even black and orange striped like a tiger! Then one day a chameleon has an idea to remain one color forever by staying on the greenest leaf he can find. But in the autumn, the leaf changes from green to yellow to red . . . and so does the chameleon. When another chameleon suggests they travel together, he learns that companionship is more important than having a color of his own. No matter where he goes with his new friend, they will always be alike. Now available as an eBook.
