Book Description
Excerpt from Key-Notes to the Materia Medica When it was proposed that my lectures on Materia Medica be published, I consented, on condition that they should be reported as delivered, (for they were not written out), including all my comparisons, exhortations, explanations, actual cases in practice, in point, &c. The profession at large would then have had an opportunity of judging of their value; and the Student a living reminder of the manner of using the Materia Medica. This would have made a much larger book, and to my mind a far more useful one. Some of my colleagues, be it said to their credit, strove hard that my plan might be fulfilled; others objected, saying, that the remedies and their dead symptoms only, were most important. My son, Jos. C. Guernsey, M.D., (who has from the first reported and attended to the publishing of the lectures), has had the great labor of assorting and arranging these symptoms as best he could, to keep the whole from appearing in a confused and unintelligible mass of words. It must be remembered, that in a Medical School, where all classes of students congregate, we cannot give such lectures as would interest the old and skillful practitioner. To give anything like an exhaustive course of lectures on the Materia Medica, would require at least from three to four sessions of five months each, to complete even one course. The book will be found to contain, only the more characteristic symptoms, and generally, only those peculiar to each remedy. It is hoped the work may prove of value, both to the practitioner and student. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Notes on Materia Medica This book is throughout entirely selective in character, and aims in no degree at completeness. It is not intended to replace the regular text-book, but has been written as an aid to the student in the study of the text-book. Much confusion arises in the minds of students from the enumeration of many different theories in regard to disputed points, and I have, therefore, in this book made categorical statements concerning such doubtful matters, choosing the explanation which seemed to me most rational, with the view of simplifying for them an intricate subject. Book Description
Excerpt from Method of Memorizing the Materia Medica N observer would find little pleasure in contemplating the shapeless ma ss upon which the sculptor begins - the un cultivated eye failing to understand the possibilities lying dormant in the rude block of marble until the skillful strokes of the artisan begin to transform its crude propor tions into a something with a semblance of light and shade. Then attention would be invited, and as curves and outlines became more delicate and more gracefully rounded, all else would be forgot in the contempla tion of gradually awakening beauty. Book Description
Excerpt from Recent Materia Medica: Notes on Their Origin and Therapeutics All branches of Medical Science have taken great strides of late years. In Surgery, Spencer Wells and Lister, in Biological Medicine, Pasteur and Koch, have made clear steps in advance; and Therapeutics have become more rational, based on more accurate knowledge and a more extended field. And here an advanced state of information about new Materia Medica must be a decided help to the medical practitioner. Although there are many well-known remedies, superior in general practice to those mentioned in the following pages, yet every medical man has occasionally cases in which he would be glad to "ring the changes," and humour the system of his patient by trying a new medicine. The information in these Notes is compiled from many sources, extending over several years. Besides the Medical and Pharmaceutical Periodicals, the author owes thanks to the new Pharmacopoeias of Germany, the United States, and France; to the Year Books of Pharmacy, the Therapeutical works of Bartholow, Wood, Napheys, Farquharson and Ringer; Husemann and Hilger's "Pflanzenstoffe," Hanbury's "Pharmacographia," Bentley and Trimen's Medicinal Plants," Martindale's "Extra Pharmacop ia," Squibb's "Ephemeris," the "Therapist," Christy's "New Plants," Baillon's "Botanique Medicale," Quam's "Dictionary of Medicine," Papers by E. M, Holmes, Merck, Helbing, &c., &c. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Characteristic Materia Medica The following work is neither a Text-book, nor an Epitome much less is it offered as a substitute for the Materia Medica. But from all the sources within my reach, including pretty much the entire range of our English and Amer ican Homoeopathic literature, I have endeavored to col lect those symptoms, which, whether originally patho genetic, or clinical only, have come to be regarded as Characteristics, and as - Key-notes, by reason of their own prominence, or from the frequency of their mention by the best authorities. Book Description
Excerpt from Notes on Materia Medica and Therapeutics: Taken From Lectures Delivered by Prof. William H. Thomson, M.D., LL. D IN preparing the fourth edition of these notes, the editor has been thoroughly mindful of the introduction of several valuable drugs since the publication of the last edition, and the prominence given in recent lectures by Prof. Thomson to some of these, and the desirability of having fuller notes on some of the older remedies, have rendered necessary the issue of the present edition. Advantage has been taken of the occasion to make what is practically a new work, for the present notes are based upon stenographic reports of the lectures delivered dur ing the winter session of 1888 - 89, the material in the older editions for obvious reasons having been drawn upon to a slight extent only. To render the work as complete as possible, several mono graphs by Prof. Thomson, bearing directly upon the uses and administration of drugs, have been introduced. Other new fea tures are the frequent use of cross-references and a summary at the end of each of the principal drugs.
