Book Description
Using selections by American, British, French, German, Russian, Scandinavian, Spanish, Portuguese, and South American critics and authors, Professor Becker illustrates how realism arose as a reaction to romanticism, and how the practitioners of realism developed conflicting ideas about the means they should use and the ends toward which they should strive. The selections are concerned mainly with prose, since, according to the author, prose fiction has been the major vehicle of realism. Originally published in 1963. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Book Description
The Dialogue on Poetry is one of the most important of Schlegel's critical and philosophical writings. Modeled on Plato's Symposium, it comprises eulogies on poetry delivered by participants in a fictitious conversation, who represent the historical figures of the German Romantic School. Thus the Dialogue expounds the main critical ideas of German Romanticism and simultaneously provides a panorama of the early Romantic Movement. Schlegel was the leading critical thinker of the German Romanticists. His importance for the theory of Romantic poetry and the history of criticism becomes increasingly obvious with the growing interest in Romanticism. René Welleck called Schlegel "one of the greatest critics of history"; George Lukacs based his theory of the novel on Schlegel's ideas; and Ernest Robert Curtius said about Schlegel's position within the history of literary criticism: "In Germany we have Friedrich Schlegel--and beginnings." This first English edition of Dialogue on Poetry, which also contains a carefully chosen selection of Schlegel's poetic aphorisms, affords scholars and students in the field of Philosophy and in Comparative, General, and German Literature a new avenue of approach to European Romanticism.

Book Description
Between the wars a personality cult grew around Masaryk. These three volumes constitute the first balanced critical assessment of the actual achievement of the university professor who became the first president of Czechoslovakia. In this the first volume scholars from Europe and North America offer new insights into the career and ideas of Masaryk during the three decades preceding the outbreak of World War I. They appraise his role as critic of injustice and outworn tradition, providing a most significant interpretation of his place in modern history.

Book Description
Behler discusses the current state of thought on modernity and postmodernity, detailing the intellectual problems to be faced and examining the positions of such central figures in the debate as Lyotard, Habermas, Rorty, and Derrida. He finds that beyond the “limits of communication,” further discussion must be carried out through irony. The historical rise of the concept of modernity is examined through discussions of the querelle des anciens et des modernes as a break with classical tradition, and on the theoretical writings of de Stael, the English romantics, and the great German romantics Schlegel, Hegel, and Nietzsche. The growth of the concept of irony from a formal rhetorical term to a mode of indirectness that comes to characterize thought and discourse generally is then examined from Plato and Socrates to Nietzsche, who avoided the term “irony” but used it in his cetnral concept of the mask.

Book Description
This selection of documents - for the most part never before translated into English - traces the process of modernization which took place in Russia between 1856 and 1881. Political, social and economic developments are dealt with in thematic sections and the documents also show the growth of the revolutionary movement and conservative attempts to quell it. The great flowering of Russian literature and art during the quarter-century is also reflected. The documents are accompanied by individual commentaries and an extensive guide to further reading, whilst the volume is prefaced by a substantial introductory essay setting the documents in context.
