His avocation was the study of comparative religion. After his retirement from the judiciary in 1896, Troward set out to apply logic and a judicial weighing of evidence in the study of matters of cause and effect. The philosopher William James characterized Troward's Edinburgh Lectures on Mental Science as "far and away the ablest statement of philosophy I have met, beautiful in its sustained clearness of thought and style, a really classic statement."According to Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) archivist Nell Wing, early AA members were strongly encouraged to read Thomas Troward's Edinburgh Lectures on Mental Science. Troward was a past president of the International New Thought AllianceGeneviève Behrend studied with Troward from 1912 until 1914; Behrend was the only personal student he had throughout his lifeGeneviève Behrend (1881 in Paris - 1960 in United States) was a French-born author and teacher of Mental Science, a New Thought discipline created by Thomas Troward. After her studies with Troward she founded a New Thought school called The School of the Builders in approximately 1915 in New York City, running it herself until 1925. She then founded another New Thought school in Los Angeles, after which she traveled throughout North America lecturing on mental science and New Thought for 35 years, as well as giving radio broadcasts. She is quoted as an expert in the best-selling self-help book The Secret by Rhonda Byrne

Book Description
The early "New Age" philosophy of New Thought, which was wildly popular at the turn of the 20th century, owes much of its emphasis on the concept of "mind over matter" to the works of Thomas Troward. In this two-in-one volume, which brings together two of Troward's celebrated books on "mental science," the author-who was renowned for presenting difficult ideas with clarity and enthusiasm-discusses: . the higher mode of intelligence that controls the lower . the unity of the spirit . the subjective and objective minds . the law of growth . intuition and the will . the subconscious mind . individuality . the creative power of thought . and much more. First published in 1909, Troward's writings remain of immense interest to anyone interesting in personal spiritual development. English judge, philosopher, and painter THOMAS TROWARD (1847-1916) lived most of his life in India, in the service of the imperial monarchy. Among his publications, many of which profoundly affected the New Thought movement, are The Law and the Word, Bible Mystery and Meaning, and The Hidden Power and Other Papers Upon Mental Science.
