Publisher: DigiCat
ISBN:
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 59
Book Description
The Sandhills is a nonfiction book about a famous and historic cemetery in Sydney, Australia. Excerpt: "The name Devonshire Street Cemetery could fairly be applied to those sections which faced or extended to that street, but is somewhat of a misnomer when describing the original Burial Ground, which faced Belmore Park. A Forger's Progress
Author: Alasdair McGregor
Publisher: NewSouth
ISBN: 1742241824
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 441
Book Description
A forger and convicted felon, Francis Greenway was transported to Sydney in 1814. Only a decade later, his dreams of a "city superior in architectural beauty to London" began to be realized as he designed Hyde Park Barracks, St James' Church, the Supreme Court, St Luke's Church in Liverpool, and the Windsor courthouse. In this first biography of Greenway since 1953, award-winning author Alasdair McGregor scrutinizes the character and creative output of a man beset by contradictions and demons. He profiles Greenway's landmark buildings, his complex and fraught relationship with Governor Lachlan Macquarie, and his thwarted ambitions and self-destruction.

Port Essington
Author: Jim Allen
Publisher: Sydney University Press
ISBN: 1743321619
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 161
Book Description
In 1966 Jim Allen undertook the first professional excavation of European site in Australia. The 1840s military settlement of Victoria was established at Port Essington, the northernmost part of the Northern Territory and was the end point of Ludwig Leichhardt's epic journey in 1844-45. This settlement was the longest lived of three failed attempts by the British to establish a settlement on the northern coast of Australia before 1850. Its history reflects many of the dominant themes of wider colonial history - isolation, tropical disease, poorly equipped and inexperienced colonists, inept government bureaucracies and relations with the Indigenous population.
