Book Description
In 1890, Professor Arthur Willis Goodspeed, a professor of physics at Pennsylvania USA was working with an English born photographer, William N Jennings, when they accidentally produced a Röntgen Ray picture. Unfortunately, the significance of their findings were overlooked, and the formal discovery of X-rays was credited to Wilhelm Roentgen in 1895. The discovery has since transformed the practice of medicine, and over the course of the past 130 years, the development of new radiological techniques has continued to grow. The impact has been seen in virtually every hospital in the world, from the routine use of ultrasound for pregnancy scans, through to the diagnosis of complex medical issues such as brain tumours. More subtly, X-rays were also used in the discovery of DNA and in military combat, and their social influence through popular culture can be seen in cartoons, books, movies and art. Written by two radiologists who have a passion for the history of their field, The History of Radiology is a beautifully illustrated review of the remarkable developments within radiology and the scientists and pioneers who were involved. This engaging and authoritative history will appeal to a wide audience including medical students studying for the Diploma in the History of Medicine of the Society of Apothecaries (DHMSA), doctors, medical physicists, medical historians and radiographers.

Book Description
This book presents standard imaging techniques, basic anatomy and an approach to common pathology encountered in temporal bone imaging. Intended as a survival guide for residents and general radiologists, it covers all topics comprehensively, and provides intuitive point-by-point summaries, similar to those of popular radiology reference sites, for easy comprehension at a glance. The book also offers guidance on the pertinent points that need to be included in a report and how to answer basic questions that are likely to be asked by the referring clinician or supervising radiologist. This book will be a valuable resource for general radiologists, radiology residents, ENT residents, otology surgeons and anyone involved in the occasional temporal bone study.

Book Description
The year 1995 commemorates two centenaries in connection with William Conrad Rontgen: 8 November marks the centenary of his discovery of X-rays at Wurzburg; 27 March is the 150th anniversary of his birth at Lennep near Remscheid. Medical radiology initially involved the use of X-rays for the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Becquerel then discovered radioactivity in 1897, and Marie Curie isolated radium in 1899. These newly discovered radioactive substances were almost immediately used in therapy and this remained the state of affairs for many years. Following the Second World War radionuclides were introduced into the medical diagnostic field and are now providing unique contributions to functional studies and molecular biology. Diagnostic ultrasound started in the 1950s and rapidly increased in use and diversity during the 1970s and 1980s, X-ray techniques, both diagnostic and interventional, have continued to develop with the introduction of image intensification in the 1960s and computed tomography scanning in the 1970s. More recently the phenomenon of nuclear magnetic resonance has been utilized in magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance spectroscopy, which have revolutionized our understanding of disease. The story of these developments and their applications is told in this book. The authors are drawn from the various disciplines that have contributed to the advance of medical radiology, and provide a wide-ranging survey of the 100 years of "invisible light."
