Excerpt from The Journal of the Oklahoma State Medical Association, 1916, Vol. 9 Any transitory cause producing on the vascular system increased blood pressure may be spoken of as functional hypertension. The increase of tension due to excessive mental activity or physical exertion, as found m forcible inspiration in normal man, are physiological acts which force a large amount of blood to the heart and brain. Increase In the viscosity of the blood impedes the circulation of the blood througho the capillaries (russell), and hence high tension. Acute gastric and intestinal pain may cause hypertension (curschmann.) Nicotine, alcohol, ergot, adrenalin, pituitrin, hydrastine hydrochlorate and 'stypticin are among the drugs which cause increase in blood-pressure. Nicotine (and pyridine) is one of the most destructive agencies to constructive metabolism in the arteries of the brain and should be ranked with alcohol.' Toxic factors are found in eclampsia (h. Vasquez), gout, alimentary intoxication, bact'eremias and uremia. Psychical hypertension of great intensity is seen in fright, anger, sudden joy and great sorrow. Extreme high tension may accompany acute compression of the brain ln frac ture of the base of the skull, and m apoplexy. Acute cerebral anemia produces the same symptoms as cerebral compression, hence, high tension. Obstruction of the cerebral sinuses and veins may be due to pressure 011 the innominate or jugular veins, by a tumor or aneurysm, to suffocation and strangling, to excessive strain, to tricuspid insufficiency, to embolism, to thrombosis, to arterial and venous degeneration, to ulceration, to abscess, and to hemorrhage. Wein burger observed ln the case of a gardener of 36, an aneurysm and rupture of the vessels, and the basal arteries and aorta were sound. Excerpt from The Journal of the American Medical Association, Vol. 36: April 6, 1901 Fournier, of Paris, recently made some studies from the cases of syphilis coming to him in private practice. He found that fully 25 per cent. Of' all females whom he had seen in private practice had contracted the dis ease innocently and undeservedly, and in the discussion of his paper, Ricord thought that that proportion was too low. Of the married females in Fournier's practice he found that in 75 per cent. Of the cases the disease was unmistakably traced to the husband. In my own private practice I found that in fully 50 per cent. Of the females, the disease was acquired in a perfectly innocent manner, while among the married females the percentage of innocent infections would be 85 per cent, or more. Surely, then, there is reason in the plea' that some thing should be done to prevent the wholesale infection of these innocent victims of marital syphilis. But if this aspect of the subject is dark, that of hereditary syphilis is yet darker, and calls even more strongly for relief. Excerpt from The Journal of the American Medical Association, Vol. 46: April 7, 1906 Kronlein, in 1902, reported 50 radical operations, with.14 deaths, 28 per cent. At the time of the report 22 patients were living, 4 three years and upward, 7 more than 2 years and 13 more than 1 year. Mikulicz, in 1901, reported 100 stomach resections, with 37 deaths, 58 of those who recovered were traced. Seventeen were alive more than 1 year, 10 more than 2 years, and 4 more than years. Dr. Chas. H. Mayo and I have resected the stomach 100 times, with 14 deaths, 14 per cent. This includes every case dying in the hospital, 5 after 3 weeks and 2 after more than 1 month; In the last 63 cases, begin ning with Jan. 1, 1904, there were 6 deaths, per cent., and in this group there were 25 consecutive cases, with but 1 death.
