Experimental Embryology of Vascular Plants
Author: B. M. Johri
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642677983
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 285
Book Description
A long time ago botany used to be regarded as the scientia amabilis, the friendly science, eminently suitable for leisured amateurs. Since then, and particularly in this century, it has grown tremendously in its importance and in its intimate contacts with various other disciplines of science, some of which, like plant genetics and plant physiology, at one time indeed used to be included under the broad term botany. In spite of the fact that such subjects have expanded into major scientific fields of their own, botany, the mother science, continues to maintain its central place: this is because it deals with plants which constitute one of the most vital life-supporting systems of this planet. Furthermore, interacting and benefiting from advances made in other sciences, it has steadily progressed in a number of areas. Experimental embryology of vascular plants is one such field where spectacular advances have been made in recent years. The time is therefore particularly opportune for the publication of an authoritative book on the subject. It is very appropriate that the book has been planned and edited by Professor B. M. Johri, one of India's foremost botanists, whose contributions in embryology, plant morphology and morphogenesis are internationally known. He was closely associated over a number of years with Professor P. Maheshwari, the great botanist and embryologist, to whom the book is dedicated.

The Epigenetic Nature of Early Chordate Development
Author: Pieter D. Nieuwkoop
Publisher: CUP Archive
ISBN: 9780521251075
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 436
Book Description
This volume summarises our present knowledge of inductive interaction during early development of various groups of chordates. Embryonic development is mainly epigenetic, that is, each embryo arises through gradual organisation and emergence of its constituent parts and not by the unfolding of preformed structures. Development as far as the full development of the 'body plan' in the embryo is described. At the beginning of development, there is only very restricted spatial diversity, but as development proceeds the interaction of the different parts leads to ever-increasing spatial complexity of the developing embryo. Interaction starts between the different cell organelles of the oocyte and the, spermatozoon; it continues without interruption between the different parts of the very early embryo and also between the different tissues and organ anlagen of the developing embryo. The new hypothesis as to the nature of the inductive interaction, which is postulated here, is in good agreement with the experimental evidence presented and opens new possibilities for fruitful research into this basic concept of embryonic development.

Neural and Behavioral Specificity
Author: Gilbert Gottfried
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0323153623
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 373
Book Description
Studies on the Development of Behavior and the Nervous System, Volume 3: Neural and Behavioral Specificity covers the fundamental concepts and principles of neural and behavioral specificity in various species, including fish, amphibians, birds, and mammals. This book is composed of five sections encompassing eight chapters. The first section discusses the historical developments of neurobiological research; the role of visual experience in the functional development of the visual system; and the interrelationship between maturation and experience in development. The second section examines the developmental control of synaptogenesis and the precise neural cell connections. This section further addresses the main discrepancies in the evidence and interpretations of the retinotectal specificity based on the chemoaffinity theory. The third section discusses the role of visual experience in the development of the mammalian striate cortex, with particular emphasis on the incorporation of ontogenetic information into the developing nervous system. This topic is followed by an overview of the properties of kitten visual neurons and of some evidence for plasticity in the developing visual systems of frogs, monkeys, and man. The concluding sections cover the theories of innate species-specific behavioral development and the ontogeny of mammalian perceptual development. Neurodevelopmental biologists and researchers will find this book invaluable.
