Pierre Nicole was a major figure in the Jansenist controversy in seventeenth-century France. His essays, which were widely read and appeared in various editions during his lifetime, cover a broad range of religious subjects. John Locke first came across Nicole's work during his visit to France in the 1670s, and was so struck by it that he intended to translate all the Essais de morale into English. When he had translated three of them, however he learned that the work had been done already, so he abandoned the project and presented what he had done so far to the countess of Shaftesbury, wife of his patron. Locke's translation, in a neatly written presentation copy, is now housed in the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York. The three essays that he translated - 'Discours () de l'existence de Dieu & l'immortalité de l'âme', 'Traité de la faiblesse de l'homme', and 'Traité des moyens de conserver la paix avec les hommes' - deal with topics that he later discusses at length in his own writings: society, morality, toleration and opinion. This volume reproduces the text of Nicole's three essays from an early edition facing Locke's deliberately free and impressionistic rendering into English, a style which he hoped might convey the sense of the author better than a literal translation. The choice of these three essays to translate first, out of the whole of the Essais de morale, and the changes that Locke made to his French original in the course of translation, illuminate our understanding of his thought and of its development.

On the Being of a God and the Immortality of the Soul seeks to show, by largely rhetorical arguments, that these central tenets of the Christian religion can be established by Reason. Of the Weakness of Man is an extended homily on the sin of pride and its manifestations. Concerning the Way of Preserving Peace with Men reminds us that there are usually wrongs on both sides in any quarrel, and exhorts us to search our own hearts and conduct before giving way to hatred and thoughts of revenge.

This is the twenty-first volume in the Clarendon Edition of the Works of John Locke. The series aims to provide authoritative critical editions of all the writings of one of the most important intellectuals in the early-modern Anglophone world. The present volume completes the Correspondence edited by the late E. S. de Beer, published between 1976 and 1989. It contains some 300 documents: newly discovered or augmented, or newly collected, letters by or to Locke, or between his close associates. New finds have emerged from archives worldwide; previously known letters are now improved from new manuscripts or supplemented by enclosures that had become detached from them; 'epistles dedicatory' in books by Locke or addressed to him are collected; third-party letters with direct bearing on Locke are included; as also Locke's agreements with publishers for the printing of his books. This bibliography is a comprehensive listing of published works by John Locke, including all known editions and translations of his works, abridgments and selections in anthologies and several works which he edited or translated, from the first editions to the present. It covers not only the works published during Locke's lifetime, but also those printed from the voluminous manuscripts he left behind at his death in 1704. In addition, Locke's works are set in their original controversial context: entries are provided for the works Locke wrote about and for the attacks and defenses his writings provoked during and immediately following his lifetime.
