Book Description
"Following in the footsteps of Friedrich Hollstein, who began producing volumes on the German school (in 1954) five years after his first volume on the Dutch and Flemish artists, Sound & Vision's first volume of The New Hollstein German series followed three years after the first volume in the accompanying new series. Users of the other new series were familiar with the editors' objectives, namely to update and perfect the information contained in the old volumes compiled by Friedrich Hollstein (1888-1957) himself. The improvements of the Hollstein series in recent years made the shortcomings of the early volumes unacceptable. Only about one-quarter of the catalogued prints were illustrated in them. This alone was enough to make the early volumes obsolete. Moreover, all the serious users agree that the information they contain is often incomplete and sometimes inaccurate"--Publisher.

Book Description
Since its launch in 1987, the History of Cartography series has garnered critical acclaim and sparked a new generation of interdisciplinary scholarship. Cartography in the European Enlightenment, the highly anticipated fourth volume, offers a comprehensive overview of the cartographic practices of Europeans, Russians, and the Ottomans, both at home and in overseas territories, from 1650 to 1800. The social and intellectual changes that swept Enlightenment Europe also transformed many of its mapmaking practices. A new emphasis on geometric principles gave rise to improved tools for measuring and mapping the world, even as large-scale cartographic projects became possible under the aegis of powerful states. Yet older mapping practices persisted: Enlightenment cartography encompassed a wide variety of processes for making, circulating, and using maps of different types. The volume’s more than four hundred encyclopedic articles explore the era’s mapping, covering topics both detailed—such as geodetic surveying, thematic mapping, and map collecting—and broad, such as women and cartography, cartography and the economy, and the art and design of maps. Copious bibliographical references and nearly one thousand full-color illustrations complement the detailed entries.

Book Description
Christianus Ravius (Christian Raue, 1613-1677) led a life of remarkable variety, which illustrates many aspects of the career of a scholar in seventeenth century Europe. This biography, the first full-length treatment of him since 1744, covers the first three decades of his eventful career, from the Gymnasium in his native Berlin through Germany, Scandiniavia, Holland, England and the Ottoman Empire. Drawing on much previously unexploited evidence, and on detailed analyses of his numerous published works, it presents a picture of a scholar trying to establish himself in the Republic of Letters, cultivating the acquaintance of many contemporary scholars, including such great names as Hugo Grotius, John Selden, James Ussher, Claudius Salmasius, Johannes Buxtorf II, G. J. Vossius and Jaobus Golius. In the background of his precarious existence looms the Thirty Years’ War, which was a cause not only of his parents’ early death but also of the devastation of his family’s estate and his persistent poverty. Despite his failure to obtain a permanent position in any 0f the universities with which he was associated during this time, he persisted in promoting the study of oriental languages, especially Arabic. This led to his stay of two years in Constantinople and other parts of the Ottoman Empire, where he managed to acquire the remarkable collection of oriental manuscripts which was an important element in his attempts to attain employment and recognition. This study includes an account of the identity and present location of almost three hundred of those manuscripts, and also an edition of many unpublished letters from his extensive correspondence which are relevant to the narrative of his life. Ravius’s idiosyncratic theories on linguistic history receive due attention.

Book Description
The Corpus Librorum Emblematum (CLE) series presents documentation relating to printed books belonging to the tradition of emblems and imprese. The individual catalogues provide comprehensive short-title information accompanied by facsimile reproductions of title pages, and, where possible, also a sample emblem. The volumes provide a representative selection of library locations and pressmarks. Fingerprints and facsimile title pages enhance the bibliographic description of the books so that the record provided by CLE contains sufficient information to identify the edition or issue of a given emblem book. The bibliography encompasses all extant books of emblems, works illustrated with emblems, and books dealing with the theory and practice of emblematics written by members of The Society of Jesus. Translations and adaptations of Jesuit works in all languages are also included. The complete Jesuit Series will comprise some 1700 entries: about 500 first editions, and a further 1200 subsequent editions, issues and translations.
