The purpose of my study is a comparison of the notion of the cultivation of virtues in the teaching of Śāntideva and St. Ignatius of Loyola, from the theoretical point of view, as well as from the perspective of practice. I focused my research on Śāntideva's Bodhicaryāvatāra, and Ignatian spiritual exercises. For the purposes of my research, I use the comparative method developed by Francis X. Clooney SJ. In the teaching of Śāntideva and St. Ignatius of Loyola, I found a remarkable similarity in the practice of the cultivation of virtue, but a radical difference in the motivation and the goals of this practice. While the latter reflect the challenges of the universal human condition we all share they are also shaped by different doctrinal systems, which in turn reflect distinct ontological/epistemological assumptions. A comparative study of the Śāntideva's Bodhicaryāvatāra and St. Ignatius of Loyola's Spiritual exercises will help us deepen our appreciation of the points of contact, as well as of the differences between the religious traditions within which these texts developed.

A Christian Education in the Virtues examines the connection between human nature and human flourishing. It draws on ancient and medieval sources to explore the formation of the person based on a Christian anthropology, emphasising the communal nature of the virtuous life and provides a richer approach to the question of contemporary character education.
