Stan and Nan
Author: Sarah Lippett
Publisher: Random House
ISBN: 0224102532
Category : Comics & Graphic Novels
Languages : en
Pages : 98
Book Description
My nan wrote me many letters back in 2011. They were about the love of her life, my grandad, Stanley Burndred. Iâe(tm)ve never met him, he died long before I was born, but his drawings, paintings and ceramics have been in my life for as long as I can remember. Every wall of Nanâe(tm)s house would be decorated by his artworks and every windowsill bore his ceramic creations. Whenever we visited Nan in the Black Country I would study the ornaments and pictures, wondering who had made them. It wasnâe(tm)t until I wrote to Nan many years later, receiving in return beautiful handwritten letters detailing his life, that it became apparent that the work was his. The letters were so beautiful I felt my nanâe(tm)s story had to be told. Stan and Nan is the story of an ordinary couple and the people who loved them. The narrative follows their lives from Stanâe(tm)s working-class background, to his premature death, through to Nanâe(tm)s struggle to cope, and the perils of ageing. It is a memoir about the importance of family, and about death, love, living and human connection.

The Profession of Arms
Author: Sir John Hackett
Publisher: MacMillan Publishing Company
ISBN:
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 248
Book Description
I read this book on the recommendation from a fellow officer in order to gain a better historical perspective of the military profession. This book develops the lineage from Armies of the ancient world to today's modern Armies in a rather concise and insightful manner. Sir John Hackett focuses a lot on the relationship between the military forces and the countries they represent on the battlefield. He also offers some interesting opinions about training future leaders in the Armed Services based on his vast military experience and career. I thoroughly enjoyed this book (it has many interesting photos and prints throughout the text), although it is written from a European (the author is British) perspective. The author does devote some time to the US Army, but his main focus is the European military system. Therefore, if you are looking for a book about how the American Army has changed over time, I do not recommend this one. On the other hand, I do recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn more about how the profession of arms has developed over time. It would make a fine addition to your military history library if you have one, or serve as a great first addition, if you are thinking of starting one. -- website.

Personality and Work
Author: Murray Barrick
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 0787970875
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 393
Book Description
The subject of personality has received increasing attention from industrial/organizational psychologists in both research and practice settings over the past decade. But while there is an overabundance of information related to the narrow area of personality testing and employee selection, there has been no definitive source offering a broader perspective on the overall topic of personality in the workplace. Personality and Work at last provides an in-depth examination of the role of personality in work behavior. An array of expert authors discusses the connection of personality to a wide range of outcomes beyond performance, including counterproductive behaviors, contextual performance, retaliatory behaviors, retention, learning, knowledge creation, and the process of sharing that knowledge. Throughout the book, the authors present theoretical perspectives, introduce new models and frameworks, and integrate and synthesize prior studies in ways that will stimulate future research and practice. Contributors to this volume include: Murray R. Barrick, Michael J. Cullen, David V. Day, Ed Diener, J. Kevin Ford, Lewis R. Goldberg, Leaetta Hough, Jeff W. Johnson, Martin J. Kilduff, Amy Kristof-Brown, Katherine E. Kurek, Richard E. Lucas, Terence R. Mitchell, Michael K. Mount, Frederick L. Oswald, Ann Marie Ryan, Paul R. Sackett, Gerard Saucier, Greg L. Stewart, Howard M. Weiss
