Book Description
Institutional and technological change is a highly topical subject. At the theoretical level, there is much debate in the field of institutional economics about the role of technological change in endogenous growth theory. At a practical policy level, arguments rage about how Japan and the Japanese economy should plan for the future. In this book, leading economists and economic historians of Japan examine a range of key issues concerning institutional and technological change in Japan, rigorously using discipline-based tools of analysis, and drawing important conclusions as to how the process of change in these areas actually works. In applying these ideas to Japan, the writers in this volume are focusing on an issue which is currently being much debated in the country itself, and are helping our understanding of the world’s second-largest economy.

Book Description
The volume 'Japonisme in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy' was dedicated to the celebration of the 150th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and the countries which used to belong to Austria-Hungary, conducted by the Museum of Fine Arts ? Ferenc Hopp Museum of Asiatic Arts in Budapest. Representatives of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and Japan signed the Treaty of Navigation, Commerce and Friendship in Tokyo on 18 October 1869, which had an impact on international policy between the parties, facilitated the development of trade and enhanced cultural transfer. Although the Monarchy disintegrated into many successor states in 1918, the predilection for Japanese art and culture remained an important part of the common cultural history of East-Central Europe. This volume aims to present the recognition and appreciation of Japanese culture as something new and inspiring for the people but mostly for artists in the region.

Book Description
Bjarke Frellesvig describes the development of the Japanese language from its recorded beginnings until the present day as reflected by the written sources and historical record. Beginning with a description of the oldest attested stage of the language, Old Japanese (approximately the eighth century AD), and then tracing the changes which occurred through the Early Middle Japanese (800–1200), Late Middle Japanese (1200–1600) and the Modern Japanese (1600–onwards) periods, a complete internal history of the language is examined and discussed. This account provides a comprehensive study of how the Japanese language has developed and adapted, providing a much needed resource for scholars. A History of the Japanese Language is invaluable to all those interested in the Japanese language and also students of language change generally.

Book Description
Human impact on landscape can be conceptualised in terms of socially governed ecological systems. In the past the adaptive capacity of human cultural systems has been emphasised. Nowadays, a shift can be recognised towards modified views. Resources are discussed as prerequisites for establishing complex human societies. This includes also a more biologically minded view from the standpoint of the humanities. In such a view, human societal complexes can be understood as systems that manage energy and matters. The concept of social-metabolic regimes has developed in such a context. Cultures, as seen within this paradigm, are not undestood merely as autopoietic symbolic entities but as results of an interaction of material prerequisites and emerging social structures. One might dismiss this as an epistemiological shift, part of the play of science with itself. But it remains unsolved so far in terms of evolutionary theory if the ultimate goal of evolution is reproductive sucess or accessi

Book Description
In fall 1997 the Center for Japanese Studies at The University of Michigan celebrated its fiftieth anniversary. The November symposium featured more than fifty speakers, moderators, and musicians who celebrated the occasion and offered reminiscences on the Center's multifaceted scholarly and professional missions, discussions of the accomplishments of its al-umni/ae, and perspectives on wartime and postwar Japan-U.S. relations. As the first American interdisciplinary institute devoted to education and research on Japan, The University of Michigan Center for Japanese Studies has a path-making legacy. This volume, which includes the public presentations from the November 1997 symposium, reflects that legacy and the university's long and continuing involvement in Asia, which dates back to the 1870s.
