Japanese Structural Adjustment and the Balance of Payments
Author: Jeffrey Sachs
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Balance of payments
Languages : en
Pages : 88
Book Description
Policy discussions in Japan have increasingly recognized the important role of land values and land-use patterns in Japanese macroeconomic adjustment. In Japan in recent years, land wealth constitutes more than half of financial wealth, a proportion that is much higher than in the United States and other industrialized economies. Consequently, shifts in land-use patterns can have important effects on Japanese savings and investment patterns, and thereby on the Japanese trade balance and current account. This papers studies the implications of land-use policies for the Japanese macroeconomy using both a theoretical model and a multi- sectoral dynamic simulation model.

Structural Change in Japan
Author: Mr.Tamim Bayoumi
Publisher: International Monetary Fund
ISBN: 9781557756961
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 256
Book Description
This volume, by Bijan B. Aghevli, Tamim Bayoumi, and Guy Meredith, is based on a seminar on structural change in Japan held in early 1997 and chaired by the IMF's First Deputy Managing Director, Stanley Fischer. Discussion of teh day-to-day management of the standard levers of fiscal and monetary policy is interlinked with consideration for the more deep-seated structural issues. By shifting and destabilizing the underlying economic relationships and creating uncertainty, structural change complicates the task of policy analysis. This volume describes how the IMF is responding to these challenges and how outside experts assess this effect.

Japan and a New World Economic Order
Author: Kyoshi Kojima
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1136928804
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 156
Book Description
President Nixon’s new economic policy of August 1971, aggravated by the oil problem since October 1973 caused chaos and uncertainty in the international trade and currency system. There were fears of another 1930s style depression. In addition, a world food shortage and strident claims by developing countries for perpetual sovereignty over resources added another set of difficulties. This volume, written from Japan’s standpoint, suggests a new direction for the world and regional economic order. The book tackles two major issues in international economics: Firstly, traditional international trade theory aims only at static maximization in the use of world human and material resources, but, the author stresses more attention should be paid to such dynamic or developmental elements as population growth, immigration, natural resource development, improvement in transfer of technology, economies of scale, direct foreign investment and economic integration in order to create development centres or sectors in the world economy. Secondly, the author discusses how to combine a global and regional approach to economic integration.
