The material in this series is primarily ecumenical, as related to Lutheran and Protestant unity. Although the United Lutheran Church in America (ULCA) and the Japan Evangelical Lutheran Church (JELC) were part of some inter-Lutheran and general Protestant meetings and planning prior to World War II, it is a much more pronounced activity from 1948-1962. During the early part of this time period the inter-Lutheran material concerns relations among the numerous other Lutheran Missions that were beginning work in Japan; in the latter part are the plans to combine Augustana and Suomi (American) mission work with that of the Japan Lutheran Missionaries Association as the new Lutheran Church in America was being planned in the United States. The minutes and records of the Lutheran Literature Society organized in 1951 are included here because it was a Pan-Lutheran organization in Japan. On the American side are reports and correspondence related to the Far Eastern Joint office of the National Council of Churches.
