No one raises an eyebrow if you suggest that a guy who arranges his furniture just so, rolls his eyes in exaggerated disbelief, likes techno music or show tunes, and knows all of Bette Davis's best lines by heart might, just possibly, be gay. But if you assert that male homosexuality is a cultural practice, expressive of a unique subjectivity and a distinctive relation to mainstream society, people will immediately protest. Although the works Giovanniʼs Room and Invisible Life were written almost fourdecades apart, James Baldwin and E. Lynn Harris similarly portray the struggles of homosexual men who are unable to come to terms with their sexuality due to societal pressures and indoctrinated gender roles. The secretlives of the characters bring forth the way Western society views homosexuality. Referring to several fields of study, the thesis explains the problem of the Žcloset,ʼ at the core of which lies societyʼs hypocritical viewof sexuality. In the works, the Žclosetʼ is researched as a self-constructed notion which directs and even endangers the lives of the characters. Although the works have not gained proper recognition in the academic community, they hold a special status among gay black readers - for the authors have captured the essence of first encounters with a same-sex experience (which are often accompanied by guilt and shame). The thesis presents the prism through which the characters view masculinity, and it alludes to a possible solution to the negative effects of the 'closet'.

Passing refers to the process whereby a person of one race, gender, nationality, or sexual orientation adopts the guise of another. Historically, this has often involved black slaves passing as white in order to gain their freedom. More generally, it has served as a way for women and people of color to access male or white privilege. In their examination of this practice of crossing boundaries, the contributors to this volume offer a unique perspective for studying the construction and meaning of personal and cultural identities. These essays consider a wide range of texts and moments from colonial times to the present that raise significant questions about the political motivations inherent in the origins and maintenance of identity categories and boundaries.
