Relationship Between the Hamstrings to Quadriceps Strength Ratio and Endurance Exercise Performance in Trained Female Runners

ABSTRACT:Even at the recreational level, runners are now seeking ways both physiolQgically and biomechanically to improve runningperformance. The current investigation was designed to determine the relationship between the hamstrings to quadriceps (H/Q)strength ratio and endurance exercise performance in trained female runners as measured by V02peak, running economy, lactatethreshold, and 10 K running time. Ten female runners (V02peak > 53 mL-1/kg-1/min) completed three exercise testing sessionsconsisting of a Modified McConnell V02peak test, isokinetic lower extremity strength test, and 10 K time trial. Blood lactate wasmeasured through capillary blood from the tip of the finger pre exercise, at every 3 min during exercise, and immediately post exerciseduring the V02peak test to determine lactate threshold. All V02peak tests were videotaped and stride rate and stride length weredetermined at 3.13 m/s, 3.58 m/s, and 4.02 m/s. No significant correlations were observed between the H/Q strength ratio at 60 0 /sand 180 0 /s and any of the performance variables. No significant correlations existed between the H/Q strength ratio at 60 0 /s and180 0 /s and stride rate and stride length at any speed. The training adaptations of endurance running could result in an increased H/Qstrength ratio. At high levels of competition, the H/Q strength ratio may not be the main determinant of performance. Since therelationship between the H/Q strength ratio and endurance running performance remains inconclusive, future research is warranted toinvestigate the functional H/Q strength ratio and performance during different running distances.

Abstract: The purpose of this investigation was to determine if there is a difference in the peak torque ratios of hamstring to quadriceps muscle groups of women's varsity track sprinters and long distance runners at Springfield College. Nine sprinters and eight long distance runners were tested on the Kin-Corn for hamstring to quadriceps peak torque ratios at three isokinetic speeds of 60, 180, and 240 degrees per second. A multifactorial analysis of variance revealed no significant differences between the hamstring to quadriceps peak torque ratios of Springfield College women's track team sprinters and long distance runners nor between the sprinters and long distance runners and the three isokinetic testing speeds. However, a significant difference was found between the entire Springfield College women's track team and the three different isokinetic testing speeds.
