Book Description
Excerpt from Irrigation by Sprinkling Sprinkling as a method of irrigation has been practiced in California and elsewhere for about forty years. Before 1920 it was limited primarily to truck cr0ps, nurseries, and small fruits, and was practiced mainly as supplemental irrigation in the more humid regions. Stationary overhead sprinkler systems were first used in citrus orchards in some sections of California about 1920. Most of such systems were installed, however, between 1924 and 1928 in areas where surface irrigation was not entirely satisfactory because of unusually pervious soil or because of topographic features. Along the foothills east of Pasadena, the soil is gravelly in many places and the slopes are rather steep for furrow irrigation, except where orchards are laid out on contour grades; overhead sprinkling of orchards had its inception in these areas. Book Description
Excerpt from Irrigation by Overhead Sprinkling Although the irrigation of truck crops by overhead sprinkling has long been a common practice in some parts of the United States, with some citrus fruits irrigated this way in Florida, the application of water by overhead sprinkling has but recently become a factor in California orchard irrigation practice. Though scattered installations which have been in operation for some years are to be found in various parts of the State, the majority now in operation have been established since 1924. Book Description
Excerpt from Spray Irrigation The first systems of spray irrigation were an outgrowth of city lawn sprinkling. It was so'on demonstrated that by employing such systems small amounts of water could' be applied advantageously to delicate crops, especially for supplementing an uncertain rainfall. This method also was found particularly well adapted for furnishing relatively small quantities of water to truck and small fruit crops throughout the humid region. Book Description
Excerpt from Modern Irrigation While practically all authorities agree as to the many advantages that the sprinkling system of irrigation has over any of the old methods, they all realize and admit that the many devices that have heretofore been used in the attempt to apply water in this natural method have not only been unsuccessful, but the cost has been beyond the means of the average grower. Among these sprinklers have been revolv ing ones galore, all of which have been absolute failures on account of.the small area covered, the great cost of installa tion, inequality of distribution and short life. Another sys tem which has been used quite extensively, but only on account of nothing better being available, is the overhead perforated pipe system, the principal objections to which are the posts, which if of wood only last two or three years, and if of metal are very expensive to install, besides being very much in the way of cultivation, the constant turning of pipe required, the small amount of water distributed, the excessive loss by evaporation, the inequality of distribution and the stopping of tubes. This last being one of the prin cipal objections, as the smallest particle of pipe scale or other sediment will obstruct the very minute water passages. Book Description
This book, first published in 1990 and reprinted here, is a comprehensive, state-of-the art reference on the design principles and management techniques of two primary agricultural irrigation methods. The book presents a systematic approach to the optimal design, management and operation of these two systems. Focusing on the synthesis of the entire design process, the authors present the chapters in the sequence used to design systems with the analytical material presented and demonstrated in a concise manner. For the first time in any book, Sprinkle and Trickle Irrigation offers complete design strategies and presentations for all of the major types of sprinkle and trickle systems: - Periodic-move - Center-pivot - Traveling sprinkler - Linear-moving - Set sprinkler - Drip, spray and line-source Sequential sample calculations that involve the steps in the design of typical irrigation systems are used extensively. As the book progresses, these calculations become more comprehensive and are linked together to form complete design packages for the various types of pressurized systems. The book also presents a section on selecting pressurized irrigation systems, a review of soil-plant-water relationships, unique insight into pipeline hydraulics and economics, design specifications for fertilization and frost control, a glossary and an annotated bibliography of ASAE Standards for Pressurized Irrigation Systems. Sprinkle and Trickle Irrigation is an important practical reference for agricultural engineers, irrigation system designers and agricultural managers, as well as a vital text for professors and researchers in agricultural engineering. "Sprinkle and Trickle Irrigation presents beginning-to-end coverage of the processes and computations needed in the planning and design of sprinkle and trickle irrigation systems. The textbook is created for the thinking person who desires more than cookie-cutter recipes or simple, routine "rule-of-thumb" designs. Rather, the authors of Sprinkle and Trickle Irrigation present concise rationale and philosophy behind each computation formula, figure and table. They decouple "recommended" design parameters into underlying components that can be recoupled at the time of the design to apply to specific cases and situations. In the process, the reader gains visualization skills that allow him/her to peer "inside" an irrigation system, both hydraulically, economically, and operationally. Sprinkle and Trickle Irrigation is a classic design text and reference that should be on every practitioner's desk. The chapters on center-pivot, linear-move and travelling sprinklers go well beyond other current texts. Solid and encompassing economics are infused into all design topics, including application, distribution, and pumping systems. I have lectured out of Sprinkle and Trickle Irrigation for twelve years at the university-senior level. I am confident that all students who completed this design course know not only how to design efficient and effective pressurized irrigation systems, but also know why they use the procedures that they use." Dr. Richard G. Allen, Professor, University of Idaho

Book Description
Excerpt from Irrigation System Selection in an Energy-Short Economy The low-pressure center pivot was the most energy efficient sprinkler irrigation system of the four sprinkler irrigation systems studied for use on three representative Nebraska farms. However, the center pivot system's increased application rate may result in runoff and erosion on steep slopes or on soils with low intake capacity.
