Book Description
Excerpt from Ireland, France, and Prussia: A Selection From the Speeches and Writings of John Mitchel I do not believe that France is destined to fall. I believe rather that she will emerge from this terrible ordeal bright and chastened. Oh! then there will be chaunted in Notre Dame such a Te Deum as never was chaunted in this world before. In the myriad voices that swell that sublime anthem of thanksgiving and praise let yours, oh, my country, mingle! And if any presume to question your right to be present on such an occasion, be prepared to answer, as Jeanne d'Arc did to a similar question in the Cathedral of Rheims - "It is fitting that having shared the dangers and labours of the struggle I should be here to share in the glory of France!" Book Description
Excerpt from Ireland and France The terrible slaughter of the Commune is at an end. Our conquered army has returned home. Alsace and Lorraine are now German territory. In fine, the war is over, thanks be to the Lord. Notwithstanding all our misfortunes, it is pleasant to know that there was one people who did not abandon us in our trials. One people who has the same esteem for us now, as it had before the war and that is the Irish people. In this little volume, we shall brie y relate a few facts about the French and Irish Red Cross Societies during the late war between France and Prussia. The good these societies have done for the poor wounded soldiers; and also the grand ovations which the Irish people gave to the French delegates on their recent visit to Ireland. Let it be understood that the Opinions here expressed, are our own personally. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Ireland France Teutonic aspirations could be realised. She fought at that time for her national life and honour, and for the integrity of her soil. Her cause is now the same. When Prussia dictated her terms of peace and took Alsace and Lorraine, with the French frontier on the Rhine, France lay dismembered and prostrate. But the end had not yet come, and the triumph then was perhaps designed to be but an augury of the retribution of the future. Book Description
Focusing on the era in which the modern idea of nationalism emerged as a way of establishing the preferred political, cultural, and social order for society, this book demonstrates that across different European societies the most important constituent of nationalism has been a specific understanding of the nation's historical past. Analysing Ireland and Germany, two largely unconnected societies in which the past was peculiarly contemporary in politics and where the meaning of the nation was highly contested, this volume examines how narratives of origins, religion, territory and race produced by historians who were central figures in the cultural and intellectual histories of both countries interacted; it also explores the similarities and differences between the interactions in these societies. Histories of Nationalism in Ireland and Germany investigates whether we can speak of a particular common form of nationalism in Europe. The book draws attention to cultural and intellectual links between the Irish and the Germans during this period, and what this meant for how people in either society understood their national identity in a pivotal time for the development of the historical discipline in Europe. Contributing to a growing body of research on the 'transnationality' of nationalism, this new study of a hitherto-unexplored area will be of interest to historians of modern Germany and Ireland, comparative and transnational historians, and students and scholars of nationalism, as well as those interested in the relationship between biography and writing history.
