Book Description
Nonlinear effects in the ionosphere (cross modulation of radio waves) have been known since the 1930s. Only recently, however, has the rapid increase in the power and directivity of the radio transmitters made it possible to alter the properties of the ionosphere strongly and to modify it artificially by applying radio waves. This has revealed a variety of new physical phenomena. Their study is not only of scien tific interest but also undisputedly of practical interest, and is presently progressing very rapidly. This monograph is devoted to an exposition of the present status of theoretical research on this problem. Particular attention is paid, naturally, to problems in the development of which the author himself took part. It is my pleasant duty to thank V. L. Ginzburg, L. P. Pitaevskii, V. V. Vas'kov, E. E. Tsedilina, A. B. Shvartsburg, and Va. S. Dimant for useful discussions and for valuable remarks during various stages of the work on the problem considered in this book. Contents 1. Introduction . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Ionospheric Non-Linear Phenomena

Languages : en
Pages : 200
Book Description
During the past few decades, various investigations on nonlinear heating of the auroral region of the ionosphere and problems related to lower ionosphere are resulted in opening up a new dimension towards the study of various physical processes and also on the characteristics of different parameters of Atmospheric Electricity within the middle and lower ionosphere. This book embodies the results of some of the investigations in these areas. Some modeling works have been performed and results are compared with experimental data of other researchers. Some experiments were undertaken based on the own experimental arrangements from Kolkata and Agartala, India centers during disturbed ionospheric and atmospheric conditions and results are presented here. There are other areas to be explored and further studies are contemplated to gather more information. I shall deem my labour amply rewarded if the matters presented in the book prove to be useful and worthy to the scientific community in this field.

Nonlinear Phenomena Arising From Radio Wave Heating of the Lower Ionosphere
Author: Albert Andrew Tomko
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 184
Book Description
This document describes a theoretical and experimental study of the interaction of high power, high frequency radio waves with the lower ionosphere. The theoretical calculations presented here show that the electron temperature of the ionospheric plasma can be greatly enhanced when the plasma is irradiated by a powerful groundbased HF transmitter with an effective radiated power of the order of 100 MW. If this plasma heating is maintained for times exceeding a few seconds, the composition of the plasma can also be altered. These temperature and composition modifications cause significant changes in the plasma conductivity and wave absorption in the medium. Two experiments were conducted in order to test for the predicted absorption and conductivity modifications: a vertical incidence plus absorption experiment and a nonlinear demodulation experiment. Data from the absorption experiment clearly show a large (9 dB) increase in wave absorption at 2.4 MHz due to a high power (60 MW ERP) HF heating of the ionosphere. The nonlinear demodulation experiment generated strong VLF radiation when the ionosphere was irradiated by a powerful modulated HF wave. These VLF signals are believed to be due to HF heating induced conductivity modulation of the dynamo current system. (Author).
