In 1994, James Raven encountered a letterbook from the Charleston Library Society detailing the ordering, processing, and shipping of texts from London booksellers to their American customers. The 120 letters, covering the period 1758-1811, provided unique material for understanding the business of London booksellers (for whom very little correspondence has survived) and Raven decided to publish an annotated edition of the letters. The letterbook, reproduced in its entirety, forms an appendix to the present volume, but Raven's study has blossomed from a relatively narrow examination of booksellers and their customers to a larger exploration of the role of books and institutions such as the Library Society in the formation of elite cultural identity on the fringes of empire. Alexander McIntosh Watts was born in 1813 in Sumter County, South Carolina. His parents were Julius Alexander Watts (1769-1862) and Agnes Benson (1776-1871). He married Martha Dandridge Spann 24 September 1837. They had fourteen children. He died in Palestine, Anderson County, Texas in 1892. Ancestors, descendants and relatives lived mainly in Georgia, South Carolina and Texas.

This history began as a small pedigree assembled as a birthday gift for my late father-in-law, Colonel Henry Perkins Gantt (1894-1983) of Holly Rod, Gloucester Point, Virginia, on his 72nd birthday, 29 April 1966. With continued research over the past 47 years, it has grown to encompass the history of nearly the complete descendants of Thomas Gantt (ca. 1634-1692), transported to Maryland in 1654, and his second wife, Ann Fielder (ca. 1662-1726), through at least the first six generations, and, in many lines, extending down through the eighth and succeeding ones as well. In a project of this enormous size and scope, there are bound to be errors and omissions that the author leaves to future historians of the family to correct, as well as to extend and continue the narrative. Where critical, probative information is sourced to original archives, but the sheer volume of data makes this by necessity incomplete.
