Since that year the disease has spread rapidly, until at the present time it has killed 80 per cent of the available chestnut north of Virginia and penetrated western North Carolina eastern Tennessee, and Georgia, the vital centers of the remaining stands of chestnut timber. The effect of this blight from the point of View of its economic consequence has not yet been fully determined, but it now appears certain that any estimate of our resources based upon an inexhaustible supply of chestnut wood must be subject to radical modifications. Excerpt from Behavior of Synthetic Tanning Materials Toward Hide Substance The various synthetic tanning materials vary very much in the ex tent oi their solvent (hydrolytic) action on the hide substance of leather during tanning, some showing negligible hydrolysis in solutions of normal acid concentration, while others, in solutions of half this concentration, produce a practically complete destruction of the leather as such. N o relation has yet been found between this behavior and other characteristics of the syntans. As regards the fixation of the tanning material in the hide, the syntans may be divided into two groups corresponding to the two general methods of preparing these products. Those which are obtained by first sulphonating an aromatic compound and then condensing the sulphonic acid with an aldehyde (designated as type A syntans) combine with the hide rapidly, but to a limited extent, and the maximum of combined tanning material, as well as the time required to reach this maximum, are but little affected by the concentration of the solution. The second group of syntans, in the preparation of which the order of sulphonation and condensation with aldehyde is reversed (type B) possesses much greater filling power, requires longer time to reach a maximum, and the time required to reach this maximum is more dependent on the concentration of the solution. Excerpt from Action of Sodium Sulphate in Synthetic Tanning Materials It therefore follows that if a hide is treated with a solution contain ing both sodium sulphate and a synthetic tanning material (which is usually an active acid) both the sulphuric acid and the tanning material will combine with the hide to a certain extent. In other words, the neutralization of the excess sulphuric acid ln syntans, by means of sodium hydroxide or any other reagent 'which yields a soluble sulphate, does not entirely prevent the sulphuric acid from reacting with the hide during the tanning process. The extent to which the sulphuric acid and the synthetic tanning agent will combine with the hide under these conditions is not yet definitely known, but it is probable that an equilibrium will ultimately be reached, depending partly on the nature of the syntan and partly on the concentrations of the reagents in the tanning solution. But whatever the amount of the sulphuric acid which will be combined ln the leather, the results obtained in the present study indicate that this can not be com pletely removed by any amount of washing with water at ordinary temperatures. It is possible and even probable that this combined sulphuric acid which remains in the leather after thorough washing will have no injurious effect on it, but this still remains to be definitely ascertained. In any case, thorough washing of the leather after using a syntan which contains any considerable amount of sodium sulphate or other soluble sulphate is always necessary in order to prevent injury from the free sulphuric acid which would result from the inter action of the sulphate with any excess of uncombined sulphonic acid.
