These classifications are slip or fall of person, machinery, powered haulage, electrical and "other." From January 1996 through Decemb er 1999, 345 miners and contractors died at coal and metal/nonmetal operations. Of the 345 fatalities, 17 fatalities involved drowning, which contributed to 4.9 percent of all fatalities during this period.
