Book Description
This paper provides a theoretical model to address the issue of how industrialization affects the structure of international trade. Considering both horizontal and vertical product differentiation, the model shows that intra-industry trade increases when product quality improvement emerges in a developing country and when a difference in relative factor endowments between a developed and a developing countries shrinks. To promote understanding of the conclusions of the model, the paper also uses actual trade data between Japan and Indonesia and between Japan and Korea.

An Economic Analysis of Korea–EU FTA and Japan–EU EPA
Author: Masahiko Yoshii
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 981336145X
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 100
Book Description
This monograph compares two trade agreements among three important economic regions, namely, the Korea–EU free trade agree (FTA) and the Japan–EU Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA). The two new types of agreements came into effect in the 2010s. They not only create more favorable trade and economic conditions in these regions but also produce spillover effects to bring about more comprehensive conditions in other area. First, the quantitative research for both agreements using the CGE model and a tentative analysis of the Japan–EU EPA in the analysis show that both have already created positive impacts on all three economies by lifting or reducing tariff and non-tariff barriers. Such positive impacts are also expected to be felt by SMEs in these countries that are involved. Additionally, the high level of tariff and non-tariff liberalization in the two current agreements will make positive impacts on the negotiation of other FTAs and on WTO reform. The advantages of the FTA and EPA dealt with in this book are not restricted to these economic effects. As the agreements are comprehensive, they will create more favorable social conditions not only in these economic regions but in other areas of Asia as well.

Trade and Industrial Development in East Asia
Author: Peter C. Y. Chow
Publisher: Edward Elgar Publishing
ISBN: 1849804834
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 415
Book Description
Trade as an engine of growth has played a catalyst role in East Asian development; through vigorous study of performances in past decades, East Asian trade and industrialization experiences may offer some lessons for other developing countries. This book covers trade and industrial structures for ten countries and regions including Japan, China, Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand. The author addresses the comparative advantages and trade similarity indices of Asian economies from regional and global perspectives. He also analyzes the impacts of regional trade agreements from both member and non-member countries' perspectives. After a vigorous examination of the sources of export growth by the methodology of the constant market share analysis, the book examines the trade–investment nexus, the development of fragmentation of manufacturing production, and trade in parts and components as the dominant trade flows after the mid-1980s. It then studies the trade complementarity index among countries to further pursue the analysis of natural trading partners, and looks at the Krugman–Baldwin hub–spoke thesis by empirically identifying the 'degree of hub-ness' in three major markets in China, Japan, and the USA. Various scenarios of economic integration in East Asia are assessed and an open regionalism is proposed for East Asian economic integration and sustainable development in the conclusion of the book. Students and researchers of international trade, economic development, and Asian Studies will find the data and analyses in the volume invaluable in understanding the economic development of the Asia Pacific.

Japan's Unequal Trade
Author: Edward J. Lincoln
Publisher: Brookings Institution Press
ISBN: 0815723296
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 240
Book Description
With all the rapid economic success in Japan, it is easy to forget just how insular the nation has been, and how strikingly different its trading patterns remain from those of other industrialized nations. Japan is moving into an era of greater interaction with the world, but Lincoln contends that this does not mean the United States and other nations can end their pressure on Japan to continue opening its markets. "Now is the time to bring Japan into the fold," Lincoln writes in his introduction. Lincoln focuses on the question of access to Japanese markets, Japan's pattern of trade on imports, and the consequences of large trade and current-account imbalances. He argues against the United States abandoning its free-trade ideal and offers suggestions for applying pressure to encourage greater real access to Japanese markets.

Determinants of Intra-Industry Trade and Labour Market Adjustment
Author: Sakshi Aggarwal
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1527570614
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 322
Book Description
Intra-industry trade (IIT) has emerged as a major area of research in the analysis of international and intra-regional specialization. This book highlights the changes which the Indian economy has witnessed in the past two decades following the economic liberalization of the 1990s. It has been revealed that there are comparatively few studies in the context of developing economies which focus on the country-industry-specific determinants of aggregate and sectoral IIT. The book incorporates several hypotheses to analyze demand-driven, supply-induced, industry-specific, and policy-oriented drivers influencing the level of bilateral aggregate and sectoral IIT in the Indian context. Moreover, several trade-related, labor specific and trade overlap induced factors dictate the growth trajectory and the employment level of an economy. Therefore, the current research conducts an empirical analysis to examine each hypothesis and provide significant findings to explore the relationship between key economic variables, their interaction effects, and their impact on the growth of the Indian economy.
