Book Description
This handbook contains graphical data necessary for the preliminary design of ballistic missions returning from Mars. Contours of Mars-departure energy requirements, as well as many other launch and Earth-arrival parameters, are presented in arrival-date/launch-date space for all departure opportunities from 1992 through 2007. In addition, an extensive companion document is available; it contains Earth-to-Mars graphical data and explains mission design methods, from launch-window development to Mars probe and orbiter arrival design, using the graphical data as well as numerous equations relating various parameters. This document is one of a planned series of mission design handbooks. This publication is one of a series of volumes devoted to interplanetary trajectories of different types. Volume 1 deals with ballistic trajectories. The present publication is Part 5 and describes ballistic Mars-to-Earth return trajectories. Part 3 treated ballistic trajectories to Jupiter. Part 4 described ballistic trajectories to Saturn. Parts 1 and 2 treated ballistic trajectories to Venus and Mars, respectively.

Interplanetary Mission Design Handbook: Earth-to-Mars Mission Opportunities and Mars-to-Earth Return Opportunities 2009-2024
Author: L. E. George
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 166
Book Description
This paper provides information for trajectory designers and mission planners to determine Earth-Mars and Mars Earth mission opportunities for the years 2009-2024. These studies were performed in support of a human Mars mission scenario that will consist of two cargo launches followed by a piloted mission during the next opportunity approximately 2 years later. "Porkchop" plots defining all of these mission opportunities are provided which include departure energy, departure excess speed, departure declination arrival excess speed, and arrival declinations for the mission space surrounding each opportunity. These plots are intended to be directly applicable for the human Mars mission scenario described briefly herein. In addition, specific trajectories and several alternate trajectories are recommended for each cargo and piloted opportunity. Finally, additional studies were performed to evaluate the effect of various thrust-to-weight ratios on gravity losses and total time-of-flight tradeoff, and the resultant propellant savings and are briefly summarized.

Interplanetary Mission Design Handbook
Author: National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)
Publisher: Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
ISBN: 9781719494335
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 92
Book Description
The purpose of this Mission Design Handbook is to provide trajectory designers and mission planners with graphical information about Earth to Mars ballistic trajectory opportunities for the years of 2026 through 2045. The plots, displayed on a departure date/arrival date mission space, show departure energy, right ascension and declination of the launch asymptote, and target planet hyperbolic arrival excess speed, V(sub infinity), for each launch opportunity. Provided in this study are two sets of contour plots for each launch opportunity. The first set of plots shows Earth to Mars ballistic trajectories without the addition of any deep space maneuvers. The second set of plots shows Earth to Mars transfer trajectories with the addition of deep space maneuvers, which further optimize the determined trajectories. The accompanying texts explains the trajectory characteristics, transfers using deep space maneuvers, mission assumptions and a summary of the minimum departure energy for each opportunity. Burke, Laura M. and Falck, Robert D. and McGuire, Melissa L. Glenn Research Center TRAJECTORIES; LAUNCHING; MISSION PLANNING; ASYMPTOTES; TARGETS; DEEP SPACE; HANDBOOKS; BALLISTIC TRAJECTORIES; DECLINATION; MARS MISSIONS; SPACE MISSIONS

Book Description
The purpose of this Mission Design Handbook is to provide trajectory designers and mission planners with graphical information about Earth to Mars trajectory opportunities for the years of 2026 through 2045. The trajectory data used to create the following opportunity contour plots was generated using MIDAS, a patched conic interplanetary trajectory optimization program that is able to optimize the times of specified trajectory events and other trajectory parameter. The plots, displayed on a departure date/arrival date mission space, show departure energy, right ascension and declination of the launch asymptote, and target planet hyperbolic arrival excess speed, V(sub infinity), for each launch opportunity. Trajectory contour plots are particularly important in the beginning stages of mission design as valuable tools that display the interplanetary flight path characteristics for a particular launch opportunity to Mars. The use of these contour plots is an important first step for determining initial optimal launch opportunities for interplanetary missions. They also serve as good approximations for directional values of the launch asymptote vector, target planet (Mars) arrival excess velocities, and total mission flight time. These plots allow a mission designer to determine the basic requirements for an Earth to Mars transfer vehicle as well as a preliminary estimate of the required propellant load. Providing two sets of plots for each opportunity allows mission planners the ability to compare and contrast different mission architectures.
